4. Chicago South Burbs or Madison.

The South Burbs of Chicago are blue collar, integrated and 85% Democrats. It's Jesse Jackson Jr. country. It's also very affordable. I know. I live there. The only drawback is that it's not really all that hip. But I'm only 25 minutes from the Northside of Chicago, so it's no big deal.

Madison is at least a college town.

Oklahoma University is decidely conservative. Norman should be the hub of progressive politics in the state, given that it's the location of the largest university in Oklahoma, but, because of its proximity to Oklahoma City, it can't be. That award goes to the Tulsa area (even though it's home to Oral Roberts University). Iowa City, Iowa and Columbia, Missouri are both quite affordable, and -- Iowa City especially -- bastions of liberal thought.

not in Kansas anymore. I'm originally from the Roanoke area, so I know. The only place I'd live in SW VA would be the NRV.

I'm so proud VA elected Warner. Proof that VA can rise again.

They are both liberal cities and if you don't mind mid-market size, both are affordable.

The city center (Old Raleigh) is quite liberal. Just stay out of the burbs...

They've split Raleigh into 3 congressional districts and each one of them elects a Dem to the House - including David Price -- quite a liberal.

14. Cleveland.

Ridiculously low cost-of-living here, and Republicans rarely even try to run for office.

On the downside, we have the highest poverty rate in the USA. And we're morphing back into the bleak criminal cesspool we were in the '70s.

But it's a very liberal area.

to Columbus...which says it's liberal...but I felt uncomfortable with all those W stickers in my face.

to see my sister. My sister is having trouble with her church...the Pastor keeps calling Democrats 'the pagan left'.

I'm from Newark, and even lived in the short north after college...but I have to say I like Cleveland better.The vibe is more laid back. Columbus has a better trendy factor, but I like laid back better.

San Francisco. I know, I know, it's one of the most expensive places to live but imho it has the best VIBE IN THE WHOLE COUNTRY! Maybe it's because I'm gay but I just LOVE it there....it's so incredibly beautiful and of course, very liberal.
