| What do you think frequent cell-phone use is reflective of? |
|
I'm a bit insular, so I suppose I can't relate to the majority of college students who, upon leaving class, turn on their phones and yammer on. But WTF?
George Carlin once insinuated that cell-phone users are, in actuality, uncomfortable with their own thoughts; combined with the obscene number of medicated people in this country (and I realize that some NEED the medication--don't think me callous), I have to wonder what is happening to our culture.
You know what I do...I reflect. I think about Camus or my favorite painting; I think about my family; hell, I think about cartoons. It doesn't matter, because I'm not bothered by staring into the clouds, or the sea, and just thinking.
I'm just mystified by these cell-phones.

| 3. Tonight I watched a young woman on her phone. |
|
The entire time she was on the phone she got out and pumped gas (dangerous), went inside and shopped (candy and cigars, a bizzare combo), paid for her purchase and drove off. She talked loud enough so everyone could hear her talk about nothing. I once watched a guy bowl while talking on his phone. It's all chit-chat. I think Carlin was right on.

| 4. I'm a mom and I have a friend and our daughters are friends |
|
and the mom is on the phone continously non-stop! I don't understand it. We are on the way home from a volleyball game and she calls her daughter on the cell while she's on the bus going home and to the games! My daughter and I have a cell phone but we don't use it like that. Then her daughter's friends call her mom on the phone all the time and vice versa. Then her husband calls her or she calls him, etc. It's crazy!

| 5. I immediately think of two, no, three responses to your query |
|
1. Poor self-esteem (Look at me! I am in the parking lot!)
2. Slaves to advertising who think they HAVE to have one (see #1)
and
3. Ennui. Complete and total disregard for the wonders of the world around them.

what are they all talking about?
I mean, it is nice to talk to people. I think it makes them feel connected. But all the time? It's almost like it is surgically attached to people's ears.
