| What is the definition of indie music? |
|
It is anything that's not on a major label? Music that's left-of-center? I'd like some opinions so I can examine just how much of it I have, and where to explore for more.

| 1. It's really a deceptive and unnecessary term. |
|
Originally, Indie Music was born of the Punk explosion, and it was punk (and later, post-punk) music on independent record labels (such as Factory, Postcard et al). Only later did it come to mean a form of guitar-based-pop. It's become a meaningless term, like Alternative music.

it's mostly defined as music on an independent label. Saddle Creek, Epitaph, etc. it can't really be defined as a type of music, because there is so much under the umbrella.
here are some good indie bands to look for:
Cursive Modest Mouse Bright Eyes TV on the Radio Neutral Milk Hotel (i think, the best band of the past decade) Belle and Sebastian Azure Ray The Decemberists Bellafea Rilo Kiley Yeah Yeah Yeahs The Faint The Wrens Now it's Overhead
that's just a few. it's a pretty vast world of music. once you get into it, you will hear of a new good band every day.
