| Interpol "Antics" out today.... |
|
I'm psyched. I purposely have not downloaded or listened to anything off this album. At my age it's rare to actually anticipate a new cd and actually look forward to the release date. But I loved Their first record so much that I decided to do this old school and actually look forward to the release date of the album and buy it when it comes out. As long as it's at least as good as "Turn On The Bright Lights" I'll be happy since I've worn through 2 copies of that since it came out.

I love Joy Division and PIL and all the other post-punk stuff they draw their inspiration from, but for some reason Interpol just doesn't do it for me.
Maybe this new album will hook me, who knows?

They are nowhere near the genius of those other bands. I think it's a matter of their being such a lack of bands playing in that style for so long that it was refreshing for me to hear. I like a lot of other bands currently working, but too few play in that darker more downbeat Joy Division style, and the ones that do are either so over the top melodramatic (see most goth bands) or working in a more electronic manner.
You're not the only one who feels the way you do. I know a lot of people who like Interpol's inspiration bands but not Interpol themselves.

The hype may kill Interpol. I mean, they're a half-decent band, but they can't bear the weight of all that expectation.

I just very much enjoyed their first album and am looking forward to their second album.
Keep in mind I'm someone who has a 3 album rule about all but a select few bands.

The media is doing that with a lot of bands lately. It reminds me of the early to mid 90's again, where some semi, moderately worthy bands are getting heaps of press and praise. Some of it deserved but nowhere near the volumes most of these bands are getting. Same as in the post Nirvana period.
On the brightside it's better than the late 90's when the bar was completely lowered with Nu Metal. I got tired of the press having to justify their coverage of horrible bands just because they were popular, and having to hear about how the Deftones are so brilliant simply because they aren't nuckle dragging morons like Limp Bizkit, and having the media try to convince me that because Chino Moreno owns a PJ Harvey album that somehow this makes him a deep thinker and musical visionary.

On the other hand, The Dandy Warhols are working on a new album, and I can't fucking wait, so I know how you feel! Enjoy the Interpol - I hope it's even better than you're hoping.

The one that's pretty much about the rivalry between the Dandy Warhols and Brian Jonestown Massacre? I'm not even sure if it's been released yet. I read reviews of it from the film festival circuit and it's supposed to be really good.

There isn't that much rivalry; the bands are still friendly. See BJM's site. Also, the Dandys say the 'rivalry' part is wrong. Plus, the cover of BJM's "Stars" is on the just-released Black album (several original tracks are not), which I doubt it be if they really and truly hated eachother, since Anton will get residuals from that.
I'll probably see it anyway - I'm a fan of both bands.

But just the issues involved when 2 bands are close and one band becomes more successful than the other.

but I haven't heard Welcome to the Monkey House yet. I read a lot of mixed stuff, so I was a little hesitant.
Waiting to find a good price on a used one. Hard to imagine them topping 13 Tales.

I didn't Come Down would be as good as Dandys Rule OK. I didn't think 13 Tales would be as good as Come Down. Monkeyhouse isn't *quite* as good, but it's more even than Come Down (as much as I love that album, I can't stand "Whipping Post" or "Pete International Airport" and theres only so many times I can hear "I Love You"). It's missing some Dandy trademarks, such as the lush counterpoint vocals, but it's definitely worth getting. The more I hear it, the more I like it.
Did you know Black is legally available now? It's packaged with a disc of outtakes and B-sides, and doesn't have a few of the original tracks on Black ("'Nother Nameless Instrumental" "Rooster" "Instrumental" etc) but a must-have for the die-hard fan. $30 post paid (US).

I already ordered a copy & I never, I repeat never buy music new/retail anymore. I usually either download or get stuff used.
It probably won't be here till the end of the week, so keep us posted with a review.
Turn on the Bright Lights is one of those great albums that comes out of the woodwork a little at a time. After 2 years, it's still on heavy rotation on my player. If anything on the new album comes close to Hands Away or Leif Erikson I'll be content.
