TV Show About A Homeless Man?

I'm trying to think of a show that aired in the 1980s--I'm not sure if it was a sitcom, drama, or TV movie, but I distinctly remember certain features of the show.

First, it was about a homeless man who sleeps under newspapers on a bench. A group of kids find him and take him home. He has some sort of medical test done (like a stress test--he's wearing those sticky things they put on your chest for an EKG).

Second, the homeless man looked like the dad from Punky Brewster or the doctor from Empty Nest. I looked at both of their profiles on imdb.com, but nothing matched.

I don't know if this was a serious kids show or what. But this has been bothering me lately! I hate when these things bug you. :)
