Look into his eyes for a quick moment and blink. This shows that you're relaxed and not aggressive. Don't stare at his eyes to long, or he will think you're aggresive.
Just wait until he figures out that humans give good chin scratchings.

with food to finally capture my Slick, a min pin who had wandered for 8 months (!!!). Same Slick now snuggles up every night with me...
it's worth the effort....
