| Poll question: What is the worst punishment you were given as a child? |
|
I was just wondering cuz of all the threads talking about punishing children.
Well, for me, I was spanked and beaten with belts and coat hangers.
PartyPooper was a good kid. But, I had an abusive parent. :-(
What about you?

|
Edited on Mon Jan-24-05 10:48 PM by notadmblnd
so hard she broke them on our butts or dad would do the "line up" "who did it" routine until one of us confessed. The routine consisted of lining us up (there were 4) grabbing our hands one at a time (so we couldn't get away) and hit our butts with a hand or belt until one of us confessed. We would have to watch the others hop around and scream. Sometimes I took the blame just to get his little ritual overwith.

It is just plain WRONG to hurt children to 'teach them something'. Didn't they do that at Abu Ghraib? Teach them a lesson to respect authority? They knew they had no info..

Seriously, my father did the toy crushing thing. I had a favorite wind up alarm clock when I was 9, and he lost his temper and stomped it. It really hurt. The idea of taking a kid's toys and deliberately breaking them is abhorrent.

| 8. Well, I got smacked a few times and grounded for 9 weeks, but really, |
|
the worst punishment involved peas. I didn't want to eat them, and my dad said I had to stay at the dinner table until I finished them. It was the deal where, if you don't eat them, you get them served back up for breakfast and lunch and dinner until you either eat them or starve.
So I sat there, staring at the peas, until they got cold, and then they were even worse than they started out. There was something wrong with them to begin with - I forget what. Normally, I liked peas. Anyway, I had this brilliant idea to put salt on them, but I put too much. Then I tried to balance it out with pepper - which was nasty, so I poured milk on them. That was icky, too, so I tried to wash them off under the faucet.
Unfortunately, Dad returned to the kitchen, saw the peas that had fallen into the sink, and picked them out and put them back on my plate.
Eventually, I ate those peas. It took about three hours.

A switch is a supple tree branch, slender and deadly. My father would select a switch with excruciating attention to detail - selecting one of the proper length and bendability. He would pull the branch from the tree, grasp it at one end, pull it through his other hand as it stripped away the leaves. Since I usually ran around in shorts, there was no need for the further humiliation of pulling down my pants. I'm sure he laid on the lashes with as much finesse as a Singaporean martial artist caning an American lad for spitting gum on the sidewalk - and I'm also sure the caning couldn't have stung any worse. The welts on my legs would last for days afterward. Fortunately, the switch was reserved for only the most heinous of transgressions. :scared:

I recall my mother was torturing me about continuing my French studies. It was right after my older brother graduated from high school. Someone at my brother's high school had won an award for taking French from elementary school through senior year.
Recalling I was at one end of the kitchen and she was at another, she was harping at me that if I only continued taking French in high school (at the time I was in 8th grade), and I had finished the sentence, "that I'd win some award". The next thing I knew I was tasting a wet dirty dishrag. My mother bassed at me, "don't you dare interrupt me"
Thus began 10 years of hell that ended when I moved cross country to start my career.

I know how it feels, PartyPooper. I was a really good kid, too. My father had no right to treat me like that, even when I did do something wrong.
When my father died, the only emotion I could summon for a long time was great relief. Then I felt guilty for feeling relief.
My whole family is pretty fucked-up and every time I go to counseling, my psychologist comments on how much better I seem since I told them all to shove it. It's a damn shame, but toxicity is impossible to live with. :(

|
to something I didn't do. This happened 3 times...the first was because I had some rags that my mother had given me to make clothes for my dolls. My dad insisted that I'd taken good clothes and torn them. He kept yelling at me to not lie. I think I was about 3.
The second time, he was pissed because someone had broken a large rubber band. He spanked my sister and I every 5 minutes until one of us confessed. Yeah, he could really be an asshole. I despised him for years.
The last time I'd taken an egg to school to show my friends a trick I'd heard about...that applying pressure to both ends of the egg would not crack the shell. I was showing a friend in our carpool, and naturally, the trick didn't work, so there was raw egg spilled all over the back seat of Mrs. A's car, and I was too scared to say anything. Of course, my mother was called, and my parents wouldn't accept my explanation of what happened. I was accused of taking an egg to school to throw it at somebody, and I was spanked until I told them what they wanted to hear.
I don't like to think about these incidents too much...I don't want to forget that I've forgiven my parents.

My brother and sister got it, however, especially my sister. My mom used to beat her with a wooden spoon on a daily basis, and my dad hit her with a belt once or twice. My brother claims dad smacked him around, too. When they asked me if dad ever hit me, I just said "Are you kidding? He used to hide Ding Dongs in his closet for me when Mom put me on a diet at 7". I was his princess.

I was spanked frequently, and beaten a few times, but the most damaging was the psychological abuse. I was constantly told how worthless I was, would never amount to anything, no approval was ever bestowed, and I was made to feel lower than whaledung most of the time.
Which would have made sense if I were actually a screwup, but I made straight A's, was class president, and never got into actual trouble. In fact, I was an overachiever, trying to obtain approval I never got.

Except that sometimes I got compliments that were insults too. "You are so smart and talented, why didn't you do better?" or "You could be such a pretty girl, why do you let yourself be so ugly?" That was my mother. My stepfather was more like you described including "You don't really have any friends. The better ones you seem to have are actually just being kind to a loser like you. Those trailer park and farm scum aren't really your friends either, they are just trying to use you." That hurt me then, but strangely as a young adult, those words hurt me more because they stayed with me. I am seeking counseling.

| 46. All of the above - but the worst |
|
wasn't the spankings, the beltings, the paddlings or even the screaming (although the screaming was very bad):
I got in some trouble at school and my parents had to meet with the teacher. That mortified them, and I was punished more for their embarrassment than for the transgression. For three months I had to come straight home from school. Nobody was allowed to speak to me and I wasn't allowed to say a word until my father got home from work three hours later. During that time I had to write "I will not do (what I did)" fifty times. Every afternoon. Even weekends, when I was grounded except to go to the library. Of course, all that was after the initial beating and screaming.
I was around 9 years old. It was really shitty treatment, and what I did didn't warrant it. There was another kid in the family who got in enough trouble to suffice for all five of us, so when one of the others did something wrong, my parents went into overkill to "nip it in the bud."
