I saw AC/DC on the 'Fly on the Wall' tour. It was easily one of the top 5 shows in the hundreds I've seen. 'Thunderstruck' is about the only decent song they've recorded since 'Fly.'

I haven't liked much they've done since. I think Brian Johnson's voice gave out back in 1984 and he's just been forcing/faking it since then.

First, it's no-frills, unpretentious hard rock. They're the hardest exponent of Chuck Berry that we have had the past 30 years. From '74 Jailbreak through For Those About To Rock, there wasn't a bad one in the bunch. Been pretty much the same riffs since, but they were great for the times.

But even more than that, they atone for all the wimp-ass crap that Australia normally exports - like Air Supply, INXS, Men At Work, Midnight Oil, and other horrid shit. I'll take the most recycled, retreaded AC/DC album over any of those clowns.

Dude, you need to listen to other music besides what's played on commercial mainstream radio.

All of the bands you named are the commercial mainstream end of Australian music. There are actually a LOT of hard-rocking bands that have come out of Australia. It's just that most of them didn't make it onto MTV and commercial radio in the States.

Australia has produced a large number of punk and garage rock bands, especially during the late '70s and the '80s. Heard of any of the following Aussie bands?

Celibate Rifles
Hard-Ons
Cosmic Psychos
The Victims
Screaming Tribesmen
Lime Spiders
Hoodoo Gurus
The Scientists
X (obscure band, not to be confused with the more well-known L.A. band of the same name)

And last but not least, no Aussie band list is complete without mentioning the great Nick Cave.

I was a college rock DJ in the mid-to-late 80's, and I hated those bands too. Most college rock (like the Hoodoo Gurus you mentioned, which were real big at that time - 'Mars Needs Guitars' and that snotty crap) are just purposefully sloppy and pseudo-punkish for 'authentic' effect. Let's just make the amps buzz and sing through our nose with a snot attitude... etc. Most of that stuff is very 'emperor has no clothes', but it made pretentiously self-styled 'intellectual' college students feel special to be 'out of the mainstream', which is ironic when you consider that is where they aspired to be. The eventual leap of bands like REM from college playlists to mainstream radio is proof enough. Of course, there is lots to be said for aping The Byrds, which is what REM and countless other college rock bands did, with some mumbling, belly-button-gazing, and whining added to the mix.
