"You're a mess."
LOVE IT!!! It's one of my favorite Southern sayings. When someone looks at me if I just made them laugh, and says that phrase with a smile on his/her face, I go away happy. When I tell someone he's a mess, I always mean it fondly. I'm telling him or her,"You're as cute as a button."

When someone says, "You're a mess," and gesticulates, an all-inclusive head-to-toe wave of the hand, without the smile, I tend to balk a little.

When I've just done a favor for an elderly southern lady and she says, "Bless you", I think she's saying "Thanks".

When anyone says,"Bless your heart" to me, first-I wonder what stupid thing I've told them about myself. Then, I go to the mirror and check my teeth to see if I've got anything stuck there.

Anyone ever told you you're a mess?
I think all y'all are cute as buttons.

:)

1. Bless your heart.
You're just a mess.
I bet you're cute as a button too.

Yeah, "bless his/her/your heart" is usually reserved for some less than brilliant act.

"Bless his heart, if Lonnie had a know'd that gun was loaded he woulda NEVER pointed it at Lurlene and pulled the trigger."

Another favorite: Bubba's last words were "Y'all watch THIS!"
Welcome to DU.

2. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You're a mess!

Loved that Lurlene. Bless her heart, I heard her sing and it sounded like a cow dyin' in a hail storm!

I think, "tore out of the frame" is a good one to express anguish.

And, I'd forgotten that Bubba story! Thank you so much for the laugh and the welcome, trof.

:bounce:

Butcha haven't seen the ball since kickoff-

According to my friend in New Bern, NC, that would mean, "You look real snazzy but you haven't got the good sense God gave a pumpkin."

8. WELL, Lookit-choooooooo!
Cannikin, I love that one, too! To me, that means, "Aren't YOU all fancy and better'n the rest of us?" But there's still that "you're precious" vibe.

Cannikin, I just have to say this.

You're a mess.

;-) WAINK!

6. I wasn't aware it was a southern saying.
Quite common up here in Philly.

10. Do you mean, "You're a mess"?
If so, I've got my facts screwed up. MAN, I am used to being called "Honey" in a restaurant setting, but I never, EVER KNEW it may have been a Northern expression. My father says Grandmommy used to call him that. He's 75, and from Greensborro, NC.
