Please, no more threads about chicken.

I am trying to keep a sense of humor about this, so please bear with me.

I have instructed the moderators to lock new threads about chicken. If you must discuss chicken -- and, yes, I understand it is a *vitally* important topic in which you all have an intense interest -- please do so in one of the threads that was opened previously. Here's a good one:

I think that some of you are well aware that the discussions about chicken are not about chicken at all. The purpose of these threads is to dig up an old flame war and wave it in the faces of certain people, because you want to get under their skin. To their credit, those people have not taken the bait. But we really think that a dozen threads on a topic specifically intended to bait people is really enough.

But now we are in a completely idiotic death-spiral of enforcement and boundaries-testing. The mods lock a thread, and then three spring up. And so the purpose of starting threads about chicken is no longer about tweaking a few of your fellow DUers, it's now about tweaking the moderators.

And then I get incredulous emails from people who are shocked, shocked that discussion of chicken -- chicken fercryinoutloud -- is not allowed. As if the discussion of chicken is something that is vitally important and that everyone is really interested in.

So please, if you really need to discuss chicken, do it in one of the threads that is already open on the subject. But please stop posting new threads about chicken or turkey or whatever. I know it's really fun to tweak people, especially when those people are the moderators, but I think it's time to find to something else fun to do.

I've admittedly missed most of the most fowl activity around here, but the only thread that I started that ever got copycatted was a post for a wondrous Ginger Duck recipe a few months ago.

But around the same time I happened to walk in on my Mom who was watching the cooking channel. There was this woman who was very expressive with her hands making a 30 minute meal. I had said that if she wasn't flailing her arms around so much she could probably cook the meal in 10 to 15 minutes.

Anyway she took out these chicken breast fillets and she said, "And they're perfectly sliced just like they are in nature." I cracked up and immediately had an image in my mind of a chicken dashing through a log splitter. Later I told this story to a friend and he had an image of whipping a chicken underhanded up into a windmill and getting showered with perfectly sliced chicken, just like it is in nature.

Too bizarre.

I wish the moderators and the admins would allow DU to self-moderate on some of these more inane issues. If copycats were outlawed, for example, you would have dozens more threads instantaneously that crept up to the edge of copycattery just to see where the axe would fall, whereas if no mod action was taken such an influx of purposeless threads would be despised and ignored by the members. So, some people are needling some people about an old flamewar. Big deal! These things are more properly ignored than plucked out and given the massive exposure of official admin proclamations. That there could now exist a public chicken-related admin warning is beyond ridiculous and I doubt it will help matters.
