Dear Mr. *****:
Thank you for contacting me regarding S. 1689, the President's $87 billion funding request for military operations and reconstruction in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Congress finalized and approved this request on November 3, 2003.
The United States has deployed over 120,000 troops to Iraq and Afghanistan, including nearly 10,000 from Fort Carson, Colorado. President Bush ordered U.S. troops to these countries in order to remove the terror regimes that were in power and to protect the people of these countries until a new government could be established. I supported the President's decision and strongly believe the people of both countries are better off as a result.
With our victories, however, came an obligation to help the people of Iraq and Afghanistan recover from the decades of abuse and brutality. The President recognized this obligation and has ordered U.S. troops to provide security and requested funding for reconstruction projects. Again, I supported these decisions and believe that our investment in these countries today will have a positive impact on the future stability in the region tomorrow.
I remain grateful for the brave and courageous service our men and women of the U.S. armed forces have provided our country. Their commitment and dedication to our country's security has never been more evident. The Senate's approval of the President's request is the least the Senate could do to express for their efforts in the fight against terror and to get them all home as quickly as possible.
Again, I thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. Your views are important to me. Please keep in touch.
Sincerely,
Wayne Allard United States Senator
