Non-Fiction: "Christ: A Crisis In the Life of God", by Jack Miles. (2001, Knopf)

Examines the New Testament purely from a literary point-of-view (ie. as a story, with characters and a plot). Impossible to look at Judiasm, Christianity or the Bible the same way again after reading this book. This book is Miles' sequel to "God: A Biography", which won the 1996 Pulitzer for Biography.


Fiction: "Neuromancer", by William Gibson. (1984, Penguin/Putnam)

One of the best science fiction novels published in the past 20 years. Hugely influential on both the literary and cultural fronts: the word "cyberspace" originates from "Neuromancer" -- years before the Internet was well-known to the public.
