| How can I be 44 years old and just discovering Nick Cave???? |
|
Are You The One That I've Been Waiting For? - Nick Cave
I've felt you coming girl, as you drew near I knew you'd find me, cause I longed you here Are you my destiny? Is this how you'll appear? Wrapped in a coat with the tears in your eyes? Well take that coat babe, and throw it on the floor Are you the one that I've been waiting for?
As you've been moving surely toward me My soul has comforted and assured me That in time my heart it will reward me And that all will be revealed So I've sat and I've watched an ice-age thaw Are you the one that I've been waiting for?
Out of sorrow entire worlds have been built Out of longing great wonders have been willed They're only little tears, darling, let them spill And lay your head upon my shoulder Outside my window the world has gone to war Are you the one that I've been waiting for?
O we will know, won't we? The stars will explode in the sky O but they don't, do they? Stars have their moment and then they die
There's a man who spoke wonders though I've never met him He said, "He who seeks finds and who knocks will be let in" I think of you in motion and just how close you are getting And how every little thing anticipates you All down my veins my heart-strings call Are you the one that I've been waiting for?
**************************************************
This song just gave me chills... How is it possible that although I've heard of Nick Cave that I am just now discovering him?

And don't fret about not knowing Nick Cave's work. Be glad that you've discovered it now. And hey, I don't know about you, but there's a whole carload of stuff out there that I'm continually discovering. The journey is great and never ending!

Wow, I got off on a Birthday Party jag about 18 years ago, and have been pretty well bonkers about Cave ever since. I've found his most recent releases (basically everything since "The Boatman's Call") to be pretty uneven, but still, even though I no longer run out and buy his albums unheard on their release dates, the man's packin' some serious talent. I hope you enjoy getting to know his stuff, RetroLounge. FWIW, my faves are "The Firstborn is Dead" and "Henry's Dream," but I tend to favor the belligerent Nick of olden days to the more sentimental Nick of now.

the Universe gives us the really juicy stuff when we're prepared for it. I know this to be a fact, and this truth will easily get me to 100 with no complaints whatsoever.

Well, let me tell you, the situation which put a nick cave song in my hands was NOT anything I saw coming down the pike and I certainly was not overtly prepared for ti, but I have to think the universe thinks I am, and go with that.

| 18. Cave is one of the few musicians I can speak credibly about. |
|
"The Thirsty Dog" is the best pissed-off-at-the-world song EVER.
"Into My Arms" was my first-dance song at my wedding. We all know how the marriage went, but it's still a great song.
And "The Mercy Seat" was possibly the best live performance of any song, by any artist, I've seen ever.
Enjoy checking out the catalog -- there's a lot there.

| 33. The early Bad Seeds stuff is freaking awesome... |
|
His band before that, The Birthday Party, somewhat less so.
His first album with the Bad Seeds, From Her to Eternity, is absolutely phenomenal. All of his stuff is real good though. His most recent release, the double album Abbatoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus (love the title of the first album!), is his best work in years. Definitely pick it up.
As for why you've never heard of him, couldn't tell ya, except that he tends to be kind of a "musician's musician" type of artist -- highly influencial, but something of an also-ran as far as record sales go. Kinda like Lou Reed or Tom Waits.

| 35. I discovered him in an odd little way, when he did a duet with Kylie |
|
Where the Wild Roses Grow
CHORUS: They call me The Wild Rose But my name was Elisa Day Why they call me it I do not know For my name was Elisa Day
From the first day I saw her I knew she was the one As she stared in my eyes and smiled For her lips were the colour of the roses They grew down the river, all bloody and wild
When he knocked on my door and entered the room My trembling subsided in his sure embrace He would be my first man, and with a careful hand He wiped the tears that ran down my face
CHORUS
On the second day I brought her a flower She was more beautiful than any woman I'd seen I said, 'Do you know where the wild roses grow So sweet and scarlet and free?'
On the second day he came with a single rose Said: 'Will you give me your loss and your sorrow?' I nodded my head, as I layed on the bed He said, 'If I show you the roses will you follow?'
CHORUS
On the third day he took me to the river He showed me the roses and we kissed And the last thing I heard was a muttered word As he stood smiling above me with a rock in his fist
On the last day I took her where the wild roses grow And she lay on the bank, the wind light as a thief As I kissed her goodbye, I said, 'All beauty must die' And lent down and planted a rose between her teeth
CHORUS
--------------
The video is fantastic too - I'm sure you could find it online.
