| Do you like Dean Koontz as an author? |
|
I am reading a book of his right now. Someone gave it to me, and I decided to give it a go. I don't recall reading any of his books before. So what do you think of him?

if you know what I mean...light and suspenseful. Writing is not very complex.

Nothing too deep. I am reading Life Expectancy. I read fast, so I'll be done by tomorrow probably. I am already on page 200 and I started at 8:30 last night!

Light and quick to read. He doesn't get as schmaltzy or insipid as Stephen King has gotten lately.

|
His earlier books like 'Night Chills', 'Phantoms' and the like were good, his newer stuff is kind of . . . meh.

|
He makes up dumb words when ordinairy English would suffice.
And I can live without the "let's terrorize women" thang.
Otherwise, not too bad.
Khash.

| 7. I find his books depressing |
|
I keep reading the new ones as they come out, but there is something so bleak about them, even though they usually have happy endings, of a sort.
Can't say I really enjoy him.

...I would not back-up to finish him off just because he is not Stephen King.

Others swear by Koontz.
Maybe the books I was reading were too far along in his development of his style.

|
Edited on Tue Nov-22-05 10:39 AM by ZombyWoof
I worked in the book biz for a long time. His shit is more contrived than King's, which is saying something. At least King's hackery has yielded a few good movies ("The Shawshank Redemption" for example). Koontz has no redeeming qualities. A total bore.
I can't tell you how many idiots came up to me looking for "The Book of Counted Sorrows". :hurts:

As popcorn reads. But with his latter books, I see why he poses with his dog for the jacket cover. They read like the dog sat down and pawed the keyboard.

Not as formulaic as Michael Chrichton, though. I really enjoyed "Watchers" and "Lightning."

I had a roommate who was a fan and I read about 5 of his books. Why? We didn't have cable and I was bored. You can get through those things in about an afternoon.
