| How do you get the smoke smell out of the house? |
|
We got back from church this evening and I started a fire in the fireplace, with the damper OPEN. For some reason, the chimney wouldn't draw properly and the house filled with smoke before I could get the fire put out. Now it smells awful. I put fans in two windows to exhaust as much as I could, but it's in everything now. Carpet, furniture, drapes.
Any suggestions??
Thanks!

| 1. Febreze, and plenty of it. |

Next time, light a twisted sheet of newspaper and hold it up into the chimney before starting the fire. That'll help get the draft started.
Or do what we did and get propane firelogs. Then you just have to push the button on the remote control. And no smoke, and no ashes.

febreze and you'd never know a smoker smokes a pack of cigarettes a day in it.

| 2. Talk to someone from the fire dept. |
|
They may be able to point you in the direction of someone who deals with problem cleanups. They themselves might know what would work.

It's not quite as bad this morning, but it's still obvious. Maybe if I could get the smoke out of my nostrils (I swear it's embedded in my nose), it wouldn't be so bad. I also have life-threatening asthma, so getting the smell out is important! The bedspreads and shower curtain are ready to be washed and some scented candles and candle warmers have helped a little.
I used this fireplace two weeks ago with no problem. I'm wondering if maybe there isn't a nest or something new in the chimney because it smoked as though the damper wasn't open at all...
It was a memorable Christmas Eve!

fire. I like this orange spray from Trader Joe's. It's like $5 a can, but works wonders (if you like the smell of orange)

| 9. I think that there are companies that specialize in that sort of thing. |

Might be expensive, though. You could look one up in the phone book and call and ask a lot of questions, to see if they might be able to give you some tips.

Get a clean, dry broom and sweep the carpet and pat the drapes while you have the fans running. Move the broom over the walls, like you were scratching someones back. It will kick up particles which the air will take away. Alternate for carpets- Open all doors/windows in the room and start vacuuming. Close ten minutes after you are done.
The febreze suggestion is great also. Do the sweep first and spray second and you will be like new.
