I think the voters appreciated both movies equally and split the top two honors by giving Ang Lee the best director and then Paul Haggis got his award with best movie!

There were 5 great films nominated. All were brave in their own way. The bitterness over this film's win is a bit mystifying to me.

I mean, her was a film that spoke about how all of us have prejudices even though sometimes we don't realize it until the exact moment that we are confronted with those prejudices (hence the title "Crash").
I would have liked to have seen more acting nominations but I guess it was so difficult to choose from because it was an ensemble cast with several standout performances. But Matt Dillon was amazing as the racist cop although I think Thandie Newton should have also received a nomination

I thought "Crash" was bad when I saw it nearly a year ago. To those of us who thought that "Crash" was bad, the award just makes it even worse.

| 42. I'm curious, finnfann, what part of the country you live in... |
|
Maybe reactions can be predicted based on geography and lifestyle?
I live in a very racially mixed neighborhood (one of the few--Chicago, with its tremendous ethnic diversity, is still one of the most segregated cities in the nation) on the far north side of Chicago. I am biracial. I have personally experienced racism throughout my life, having lived all over the country.
Crash struck me as false, and to borrow someone else's word, "contrived." It purports to take a good hard look at race relations in America from several perspectives, but fell flat and came across very two-dimensional. "liberal claptrap" was how another member coined it, and I agree wholeheartedly. Spike Lee has done a MUCH better job of exploring race relations in America. I certainly respect your right to your opinion; I just don't happen to agree with it and suspect that people who live in predominately white, middle-class rural or suburban communities would value the message more than those of us who live in more diverse areas. I'm not judging, I'm just saying...

Brokeback is a cultural milestone. It is the most talked about movie of the year. It is beautifully shot, acted, written and directed.
There have been many, many films about racism. ONe of the most seminal ones was Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. They have won Oscars. The subject matter is now considered safe.
There have been almost no mainstream films that deal with the sickness of homophobia and how it destroys lives.
Unfortunately, this seminal film lost to a lesser film this year, because of the very subject matter the film dissects: homophobia. Older members of the Academy couldn't bring themselves to vote for a "gay cowboy" movie.
This is an (albeit small, inconsequential) win for bigoted religious rightwingers. They mounted a hate-filled P.R. campaign against the movie and the Academy buckled.

Brokeback was clearly, far and away, a better film. Superb acting, wonderful adaptation, beautifully directed, gorgeous cinematography. And...again...the acting.
Hollywood took the safe road. They didn't want to rock the boat.
They had a chance to really help our cause, and they flinched.

Why should the vote for best picture be based on "the cause?"
Every film nominated for Best Picture was FLAMINGLY liberal. Why is only one the valid choice for "the cause?"

At least be honest here....homophobic bigotry is running rampant in the United States today.
I believe that Hollywood chickened out, bowed to the pervasive hate-filled attitude of this administration and went with a safer film.
You can agree or disagree, but that is where I stand on the issue of gay rights.

As a budding screenwriter, "Crash" is the movie I would most have liked to write. It was unconventional, brave, confrontational and nuanced.
So God help you if I ever make a movie. :P

Not afraid to be controversial, while at the same time being extraordinarily human.
It refused to present the side of us we want to see, and instead presented something close to the truth.
This is the best Best Picture winner in at least 10 years. :woohoo::party:

|
It's all subjective. Brokeback is a great film as well. What Brokeback has is that it's going to resonate culturally forever. Many films such as "Giant", "Taxi Driver" or "Sunset Boulevard" never won Best Picture either. Yet, they are considered now to be better than the other films that did win that year. It's something that is superficial in many ways, because an award is just a certain status symbol recieved in a moment. The greatness of a film remains evident as the years go by, and Brokeback will have that. I was surprised at the choice, but not all that surprised. Crash is deserving, so were the other choices. The winner is chosen on the opinion of a select group of people. Sometimes they get it right, sometimes they don't, but that doesn't denigrate the magnitude of a film or the labor that went into it.
