| 10. My life has been a poor attempt, to imitate the man... |
|
An only child Alone and wild A cabinet maker's son His hands were meant For different work And his heart was known To none -- He left his home And went his lone And solitary way And he gave to me A gift I know I never can repay
A quiet man of music Denied a simpler fate He tried to be a soldier once But his music wouldn't wait He earned his love Through discipline A thundering, velvet hand His gentle means of sculpting souls Took me years to understand.
The leader of the band is tired And his eyes are growing old But his blood runs through My instrument And his song is in my soul -- My life has been a poor attempt To imitate the man I'm just a living legacy To the leader of the band.
My brothers' lives were different For they heard another call One went to Chicago And the other to St. Paul And I'm in Colorado When I'm not in some hotel Living out this life I've chose And come to know so well.
I thank you for the music And your stories of the road I thank you for the freedom When it came my time to go -- I thank you for the kindness And the times when you got tough And, pap, I don't think I Said 'I love you' near enough --
The leader of the band is tired And his eyes are growing old But his blood runs through My instrument And his song is in my soul -- My life has been a poor attempt To imitate the man I'm just a living legacy To the leader of the band I am the living legacy To the leader of the band.

That must have been quite a blow.
I was 37 when my dad died.
Sometimes I wish my father had been a creep, because then his death wouldn't have left such a gaping hole in my life.
Other times I realize how ridiculous that is. I inherited his sense of humor and his love of the absurd. And I wouldn't trade a minute of it.

oldest was 12. It was extremely hard on them. They both went through some problem years, but thankfully they have turned things around, and they are both wonderful, very together adults.
The five of us like to do imitations of dad, of some of the funny things he would do, and we crack each other up. And she share stories about him, some that make us laugh, some that make us kind of sad, but nevertheless, stories that keep him alive in our hearts and minds.

I didn't say it enough, and I sure never showed him enough.
I was soooo embarrassed when he called me Punkie Pie, and I ordered him to stop it. Gods, I would give anything to hear him call me that one more time.
Happy Father's Day wherever you are, Dad. :toast:

I was barely of age to understand. I watched as they wheeled his lifeless body past me, muttering, "he isn't with us right now" like a fucking 14 year old boy would understand that.
I lost my best friend the year before, and I lost too many that year to count.
NOT an easy day for me...

He died on Dec 6 1979 age 53 yrs, 6 mos. I was 18 at the time. It was quite a difficult time. I had also lost my maternal grandfather earlier that year.
What did I get from him: my love of sports. He was a lifelong Phillies and Eagles fan. I could remember him watching golf, bowling and ABC's Wide World of Sports. He was both an avid bowler and golfer.
He also gave me one piece of advice: When eating out at a restaurant, order what you don't get at home. I got that on the Sunday we all went out for dinner to celebrate my step grandfather's 75th birthday. He wanted us to order lobster tails. I talked him out of it for us kids due to the price. I ordered veal cutlet and spaghetti. My step-mother cooked spaghetti at home, but not veal cutlet.
My father also served in the USMC during WWII. He and his twin brother served in the Pacific. He and his brother were identical twins, which made for some very interesting situations. He was a glazer as a profession. He could also repair screens and regular window. My father was also big on making sure we used correct English grammar. Whenever I'd hear someone not using correct English grammar, I'd think of him.

He was only 44. Suffered one too many heart attacks.
He was a loyal brother at his Elks Club, faithful member of the American Legion and VFW. Served in the US Navy from 1951-1961.
And a drop-dead handsome fellow to boot. Imagine James Garner and Dean Martin rolled into one.
I barely knew him.

I was born 3/11/1954. I never knew him, but I'll forever love him. He died of a brain tumor they say was caused by severe head trauma when he jumped out of his Navy supply plane over the Pacific in 1944, after the plane took some flak.
Robert Lee J-------, my father, I'll see you on the other side.

He could build anything including buggies for horses to pull. He was a cowboy who bred and broke horses. He graduated as the all time leading scorer in basketball at his high school. He wasn't just good- he was GREAT at just about everything.
He was a Renaissance Man. Even though he died at age 34 when I was 10, I will never forget the joy he brought my life. Now if only I could be a sliver of the man he was.

| 33. Dad's been gone since 1991. He gave me my finest gift. |
|
While he was dying slowly of liver and pancreatic cancer, he told me that I had turned out to be a Good Man and a Good Father.
In one small sentence, he damned as faint praise any other accolade I could ever receive.
Demons walk the earth, and my father is dead, long before his time.
