yak yak yak yak yak.......everyday I'm home.....I'm tired of having to throw the blanket over her cage a dozen times a day.....I don't know what else to do. Her chirping sometimes drives me crazy.

I give her everything, she's just not happy. :(

My bird chatters all the time. You get used to it. Actually, you really get to like it. Keeps you from feeling alone. Plus, sometimes what they say is damned funny. :D

get her a partner, or spend more time socializing her. However once you get her a life partner, she may become less tame to you. If she's a highly sensitive intelligent bird, like an African grey, you may be doing her psychological harm by blanketing her all the time.

she gets lots of socializing.....she's a cockatiel.

I won't give her up...I just tell her that whenever she gets noisy. :(

6. Cockatiels are wonderful critters, but do get noisy...

I wish I still had my little Max. Very dusty and very noisy, but he bonded with me.

I gave him up because he wouldn't stop whistling. Even my parrot, Zoe, is comparatively restrained.

What I didn't realize was how bad I felt after giving him away. (1 month later, the person I gave him to sold him elsewhere. :( )

Cockatiels are just noisy birds... but if you get the right one, they ARE family. And I didn't fathom that until it was after too late.

Glad I've got my Zoe. Without her (probably a him, actually) the place would be all too quiet all the time.

I just was cranky myself. :( But sometimes she gets a little noisy and I'm at my wit's end trying to get her to shaddup. :)

10. Covering a a cockatiel isn't the best idea.

They're way more prone to "night frights" that way and they could seriously injure themselves.

9. Cockatiels love to squawk

But putting the blanket over the cage just means you're giving her attention. I had the same problem with my tiel.

As annoying as it is, try to ignore her when she's squawking, and pay lots of attention to her when she's quiet. (if she gets kind of noisy then, it's obviously excitement)

Or...is it boredom? Are you spending enough time with her? (if the answers are no and yes respectively, then try the above. Birds need lots of stimulation, and new toys. You have to be consistent with it, it takes a while)

16. My 'tiel's been doing the same thing lately, even when we're in the room

with him--and loudly, for what seems like hours. I've never noticed this behavior before.

FWIW, he's about 2 1/2 years old.

I wonder if it could be a seasonal thing? He seems to be calming down a bit, but we still go through the screaming daily. YIKES!

i'll be honest my tiel was pretty quiet except when music was played by one of the vocalists of her preference

but they will be more vocal if there is other noise around

if you have on music or teevee, it's unrealistic to expect them to be quiet in my personal opinion

have to admit it was cute to watch her try to kiss her crush on the teevee :-)

Do your poor bird a favor. If you won't treat it right, find a good home for it. Birds need 12 hours of DAYLIGHT and 12 hours of DARKNESS. You are confusing the bird. They make noise. It's their job. Get used to it or like I said, give it to a good home. It sure doesn't have one with you.

I have worked in exotic bird stores and owned four different types of exotics of my own. So I know what I'm talking about.

12 hours of darkness is a LOT, yes, she covers the bird at times, but i bet if she keeps a log, she is not keeping her covered more than 12 hours

it is worth tracking tho just to set the mind at ease, we can maybe get by on the old 8 hours but they really do need 12 and it's easy for us to lose track and keep them going too long and get them all grouchy

i used to have a bird who i swear could tell time and sounded off each night at his bedtime if i forgot, so cute

obviously if the log reveals she has to cover the bird more than 12 hours a day, she needs to look for a source of the disturbance such as ambient noise, -- a noisy background, a noisy bird in my experience


it's good to keep an eye on the ideal and not get too far off
