ps. a great deal of culture shock , but couldv'e bought 2 new houses here for the one we sold in Beautiful Sonoma Valley. Great gay friendly neighborhood here , and if you're gay that kind of thing is paramount.

4. Anonymity

The place is so big and so anonymous. Yes, people will be friendly if you decide to initiate a relationship but if you wish to be left alone, they are perfectly happy to cooperate.

Also, the gardening climate. Proximity to NYC. When the economy isn't in the pits, one can do well here. Yet another reason is that my husband is a gourmand. When he needs pumpkin oil, we want to be able to get it without waiting for a postal shipment. And last but not least: the libraries. Our library system is funded in such a way that there are constant purchases of new books.

6. It is where I work

I did not have a license when I got the job. Since, it is rural, there is no public transportation close to it. My husband got tired of driving me so we moved less than two miles from where I work. Luckily, I got my license a couple months later.

8. I had to vote other

I grew up here, in Iowa, and worked here but was laid off. I don't have to stay here anymore and I'm currently looking for work in other areas so it's not like I feel like I "have" to stay here. In fact, I'd like to escape!

I'm currently searching job sites in other states where I have other immediate or even extended family. I'm 47 and have always been pretty independant, but just a little chicken to go someplace where I don't have "someone" to touch base with. I'm trying not to go someplace colder but leaving my options open.

To me this place is almost perfect, (Melbourne FL, small, relatively inexpensive) and the fact that a local company is paying me well to do it, only makes it that much better.

The problem I have now is that my wife keeps talking about moving. She doesn't believe me when I tell her that I will miss her when she does.

13. Other: Because I fell in love and a house fell on me.

Born & raised in Southern CA, I never imagined I would leave for any reason. But I fell in love with a self-described hillbilly woman from Eastern TN, who'd happened to live in the DC Metro area for 20 years. It worked better for me to move east than for her to move west, so I moved east.

We started out in Northern VA, but this wonderful little house in Southern MD fell on us. The husband of a good friend is a contractor, and he built this house; one day the good friend mentioned to Mrs. Venation that hubby was building this little house, and one thing led to another.

One day, when Mrs. V. retires (she's a bit older), we'll move to Northern AZ. For now, we're happy here.

I hate it here. The economy sucks, wages are some of the lowest in the country, the christian right is so prevalent here you can't throw a rock without hitting a Pat Robertson worshiper (not that I've tried...yet :evilgrin:), and the there is no alternative press or place where freethinking types gather. The truth is, there probably aren't enough progressives in this town to fill an Excursion (not that we'd get in one anyway :))

Lately Asheville NC has been looking like the place for me, so that's probably where I'll end up.

...when I accepted a writing position at QualMed, an HMO that was headquartered here. I was laid off at the beginning on 1998, so for almost six years now, I've been commuting to Colorado Springs. (No tech writing jobs in Pueblo.)

I have lived in the St. Louis area all of my life and love it. I love changes in the weather, the hills around our area look like they are on fire in the fall. The culture is decent, the Symphony is good, we get Broadway Shows at The Fox and you can't beat the sports teams!

It's a great place to raise a family.

He was offered a job in Marin and we moved immediately. We've lived here for 10 years. I love it but I suspect we will move in a few years. I would like to live in a big city again.

I had lived in Long Beach in 1975 when I was married. I truly fell in love with Southern California. I came back the first chance I got. I have made some wonderful friends here, I have a terrific job, I've had some incredible relationships, and I never run out of things to do. In fact, there's always so much to do sometimes I don't know how to spend a weekend: maybe at the beach, maybe up in the mountains, maybe at the Hollywood bowl,maybe just hangin' out at the Bodhi Tree Bookstore.I'm an aspiring writer and I love the energy here too. Yes, there's the traffic, the crime, and the other downfalls of a big city...but hey....it's three days before Christmas and I (who really dislike cold weather) had the air conditioner on in my car TODAY! What more can I say but burst into the Randy Newman song: "I Love L.A.!"

Okay... there are isolated pockets of pleasant living and shopping and dining. But overall, it's in economic and civil decay.

I often find myself driving out of the county to go shopping. It's a vicious cycle that feeds itself. Nobody spends money in the county, so services and selection get worse, therefore nobody spends money in the county.

I like it here very much. Culture, fine restaurants, great architecture, diversity, gay friendly.

The only other place I'd move to is Toronto, which has much of the same qualities that Chicago has.
