3. Funny Story

I was rehabbing from foot surgery and the place was a health club that also does basic after surgery rehab. I was sitting on there getting my foot massaged/stretched out when Phil Lesh walks in. He was obviously new at this but had a personal trainer helping him with sit-ups on the table next to me. Then he went and startes with the free weights. Phil in workout gear looks really odd!

Fleetwood Mac is on a nationwide tour, sans Christie McVie, and have some new material, along with the tried and true songs like, well, my personal favorite, "Rhiannon." I saw a "60 Minutes II," I believe, that said that The Grateful Dead is performing again, without Jerry Garcia (that's his name, right?), although they said they never would. They have found themselves, again. You just cannot keep a good band down.:-)

I like the Dead (at least I used to), but they would have benefited greatly from a little rehearsing now and then . . . yeah, they were a "jam band," but I've heard them do some absolutely dreadful stuff . . . they've also done some great stuff, but when the ratio of dreadful to great hovers around 50/50, they don't qualify as a great band . . . a great concert draw, yes . . . a great way for hippies to persevere, yes . . . a great band, no . . .

Very few bands I ever heard could attempt, under 5000 watts od LSD, to play the music they plqayed. Sometimes they were "wow", sometimes they were "sucky", but they always were 'out there" for the audience.

I had a very interesting life in Worcester the early 70s. I lived with a bunch of people that were well connected to the NYC scene (Velvet Underground) as well the SF scene. We got lots and lots of Owsley acid to pass around.....

they kinda sucked sucked in the 90's. Actually they sucked in the 8u0's. But they were/are the best R/R band in t the late 60's-70's-early 80's.......after that, soyanara......

And I was NOT a Deadhead in the 80s/90s. And I saw the the Stones in Boston 2 weeks after the Dead in 72..... no comparison, the Dead, with Pigpen, was the real deal.

I saw them suck, big time and I saw them totally outstanding. Any honest fan will tell you that there were shows where they totally stunk...no way around it. But when there were on, they were totally better than anyone I've ever seen...awesome. Boston 72 was one of those shows...8 hours of audio creativity. The New Riders of the Purple Sage stated at 6:30...the Dead finished at 2:00Am.....the first time thaey showed off the Wall of Sound. You should'a been there...........

In the bandstand/roller rink. They were just skinny little punks back then and had low grade equipment. In spite of all that they still rocked the house.

25. Allman Brothers before Duane died

Saw them at their Fillmore East show which became an album. Totally blown away, and I saw most of the late-60's and '70's bands.

Anyone remember Lee Michaels and Frosty(?), his drummer? Lee played mega-organ and bass with his feet, a two-man band. I was sitting in the front row in the Fillmore West on 2 hits of window pane, 1970. Lee announces that it's their last show before taking on a 3rd man, and warns us to move back from the front 'cause they're gonna blow the house down. They did - opened with a 25-minute version of "Stormy Monday" and my hearing's never been the same since.
