I work for the Canadian government in the EX (executive) catagory. We don't have a union, so consequently we can be dismissed on a moments notice. I have seen many colleagues fired for purely political reasons and am therefore wary of any government be they liberal or conservative. I play my cards close to my chest and hope that I won't be next.

But can you understand how Ottawa beaureaucrats find it impossible to function under these conditions?

I work in the exciting world of retail. There's no union for the likes of me. (At least not that I know of anyway. I googled "retail union" once and all I could find was something about people who sell clothes at high-end stores in NYC.)

38. Well, I was a grad employee. They fired me and hired me as faculty

for less $ and no benefits. Funny thing is, they may have to make me full-time adjunct faculty because the students requested me to design a course for them which would put me over the amount of hours that makes me part-time (thanks to the union). However, if they fail to comply, that will put me in TWO grievances at the same university. The situation is an absolute mess. NYU fired me because they said I wasn't a worker and I had no right to strike, now my ID card says FACULTY. The whole thing is patently absurd.

Good luck with your grad union. We're about to go on strike again. The whole situation in academia is breaking down. Everyone needs to walk out. The whole damn lot of us.

But seriously, it's not the professors who pay us. It's the trustees. The professors are often just cowards who won't put a dog in the fight-- unless it's a fight for themselves up the totem pole. The whole system is atrocious. At my university, you need to have two books published to adjunct.

What they will do is try to hide and dodge the issue. First they say they will not retaliate. Then they say that Daddy Administration made me hurt you. Even our supporters during the strike (except 3 faculty members) largely hid from any sort of action. Only three non-adjunct faculty members EVER walked the picket line. We were on strike for six months. It was a brutal, brutal strike. And it's not over. But, it's pretty much over for me. They fired me, cut my benefits, and character assassinated me in every way they could. I even spent a day in jail protesting their actions.

Full professors largely aren't tolerant or intolerant, they are just utterly passive and disturbingly unfaithful to what they profess.
