| Poll question: How should I invest in 2004? |
|
Since the old 401(K) is (as the old joke says) starting to look like a 201(K), where should I put any money I save up in the coming year? :D

Put it in mason jars, bury in yard; save urine also
Don't forget to keep your fingernail clippings as well.

| 4. Support Democratic candidates. |

That's in addition to living frugally and saving money and investing in other ways. Our investments are finally recovering and showing profits once again. It really is important to start saving at a young age and keep on saving.

| 9. Consider a "bottom-fishing" strategy |

Something I've never gotten up the guts to try in earnest.
For example, right now there is a major beef scare because of ONE COW that got ground up and distributed so broadly that MILLIONS of people are going to be afraid to eat a hamburger for at least six months.
Your investment targets: Meat-packing companies, fast-food restaurants, grocery stores chains. Wait until you think they've bottomed out and then buy like a crazy monkey. If I had bought Jack In The Box (then Foodmaker) after the first major E. coli scare in the early '80s I would have cleaned up.
In the mean time, go for specialty food providers that sell organic beef products and non-cow alternatives like bison, vennison, etc.

... in cash. Yes, I'm watching the stock market go up, but I'm not buying it. :) As a hedge strategy, my wife remains in mutual funds.
Now, if you have cash, the next question is "is it worth the 1% interest to even bother keeping it in a bank?".
The answer could be no. In which case, a mason jar, mattress, or a hole in the back yard starts sounding pretty good :) Upside, no matter what you have quick access to your cash. Downside, if someone finds it and steals it you probably will never see it again.
Oh, and I did procure a bunch of silver rounds.

| 15. Ohio DUer's Listen Up! |
|
The State of Ohio offers a tax credit ($50 Single, $100 Married Filing Jointly), for taxpayers who make contributions to candidates for state office (Governor down through General Assembly). It doesn't apply to presidential or congressional candidates. But this is FREE MONEY and important for our General Assembly candidates.
Please take a minute or two during the next two days to write a check to your local representative or candidate. You will receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit on your 2003 Ohio Tax Return.
Now if you're feeling particularly generous, When you get your refund, you can then give that money to the candidate again and get the credit for 2004. We don't have mega-corporations supporting our candidates, but that doesn't mean that we can't raise enough money to be competetive.
Please take the time.
Full Disclosure: I am not a candidate!

I've been searching for a safe investment with a decent return for 3 years.
Stocks are riddled with fraud and there is no evidence of enforcement. Even the mutual funds are into the fraud. The not-so-hot returns combined with the huge risks make stocks very unattractive in the long term since you never know when a fraud will be uncovered that affects your stock.
The safer interest bearing investments are just pitiful. You could never save up enough money to create retirement income off these crappy interest rates.
I'm at my wit's end.
Some say real estate but real estate is not a passive investment; it's another job.
