If you believe in luck, I would encourage you to put a slice of bread, a quarter, and a cloth/towel/rag outside on the porch before midnight, and bring it back in after midnight. That way, the superstition goes, you will have food, wealth, and clothing in the new year.
My grandma told me that one.

...only thing is, by the time I retrieve the goods after midnight, the bread will be gone. We have lots of raccoons & possums!
Maybe the charm will work to ensure that the wild critters have enough to eat in the new year. :D
