So I go to the dry cleaner on the way home last night to pick up a comforter. The kid who works behind the counter is about as sharp as a bowling ball, and it takes us a while to establish my identity to his satisfaction so that he'll go look for the damned comforter. In the meantime, I call my wife to make sure I'm at the right cleaner. Cell phone won't hold a connection, and I hang up frustrated.

The kid behind the counter has just finished acting as if he is developmentally disabled because the store has a dialup credit card machine, and he's done this complete with sounds and motions. "We're retards, huh, huh." His girlfriend thinks it's funny. Then he looks at me and says, "Man, some days, don't you just want to look at your wife and go 'SHUT UP!'?" Here, he claps one hand into the other, as if he's striking someone.

Dumbfounded look on my part. Cue "Dueling Banjos" in my head.

"No," I say. "She'd hit me back."

You could knock buddy over with a feather. "What? You married to a mannish woman?" He laughs nervously. His girlfriend's eyes are huge now, and in a hushed voice, she says, "Man, that's messed up."

I miss the city sometimes.
