| GEORGIA DUERS - re: ACLU of Georgia |
|
We went to dinner with a couple of close friends tonight, one of whom is an attorney with ACLUGA. Found out some discouraging news - the state office is in a financial crisis. A LARGE financial crisis, one that could easily reduce the state office to one person answering phones and trying to find pro bono lawyers.
We'd like to hold a fundraiser for the state office, and I want to know how many folks would be interested in shooting $25 or more towards civil liberties in Georgia in return for dinner and a presentation to be elaborated upon later in a location more scintillating than my back yard. ;-) Any takers off the bat?

| 1. Yeah. I'm big on the ACLU. |

PM me the address. I'll send a check. I'm a card-carrying member anyway. Don't worry about the dinner, but if there is one let me know. I might can get another donation or two for you.

The ACLU in Atlanta has been less than helpful on the voting machines (to put it mildly).
In addition, hiring Bob Barr wasn't a terribly good move and not inspirational.
As for "just one person answering the phone" that would be entirely new because all you get when you call the Georgia ACLU is a recording telling you to put your information in a 2 or less page letter.
A live person on the phone would be a step up, actually.
I just haven't seen a lot about the Georgia ACLU that is worthy of hard earned cash, frankly.
I'd make a donation for a sit down with an ACLU attorney willing to listen to and look at the evidence on the voting machines, though.

I hadn't heard about that before tonight. That grant evidently runs out soon, fwiw. This was part of our friend's major law school thesis project - http://www.newtonsbaby.com/bethsbaby/

Was the Josh Belluardo case the boy who was beat to death after getting off the bus in Cherokee County?
I had no idea that was a gay bashing case!

I don't think Josh was even gay, but his attacker thought he was.
Beth is great, yes. :)

We just hatched the idea - no idea where we'd have it either. I was hoping we could get a few more folks interested...
