Recommend a good movie about English history

My sister is coming to visit us next week and she loves English history. She can tell you who had an affair with who 300 years ago. I want to rent a DVD with a good film along those lines... any ideas?

Kenneth Branagh's "Henry V" - "A Man for All Seasons" - "Elizabeth" (with Cate Blanchett) - you can't go wrong with any of these

Robert, Earl Leicester remained a close companion of Queen Betsy his whole life and never betrayed her. Lord Burley was never dismissed from the Queen's service. In fact, in old age he requested permission to retire, but was denied. The plot with Norfolk happened much later in her reign.

24. For some Henry the VIII action, PBS' The Six Wives of Henry VIII

is pretty good.

But if you want the Elizabeth who was doing whom, Elizabeth is a good one, masterpiece theather Elizabeth, the Virgin Queen is another. Living room viewing too...all the food and clean restrooms you could want.

What is it called when you are kind of hooked on this stuff? I know the word, but cannot get it out of that sneaky part of the brian that frustrates you the most.

The problem with most (maybe all) historical movies for someone interested in history is how inaccurate they are. Not little details, like wither William Wallace could have met Queen whatsername, but the big picture. Most historical movies are just modern stories with odd costumes.

If she's a serious history buff, she might not like most movies about English history, because they will seem unhistorical. However, she might like films set in the era which are otherwise amusing--"Shakespeare in Love," "Monty Python's Holy Grail," or something, depending on her tastes. It's fun to laugh at the bad history while getting involved in an interesting story.

Or she may like a good Shakespearean production, because the script itself is historical, and it's fun to watch what a modern director and actors do with the historical script. Al Pacino's "Merchant of Venice" is a good recent one.

Just my thoughts. Probably more about my tastes than hers, though. Sorry. :)
