and found them in my drafts a couple of weeks later...

but the accidentally sending them is a good reason not to put an addy in until you are sure you want to send it

not done with the intent of purging the system... typed with real intent to send... then as writing or concluding suddenly don't have the need to send and delete it.

I never sent one that I didn't mean... BUT... a number of years ago I wrote a snarky PM about a trend thread (tons of copycats) that I found annoying - but instead of sending as a PM - I accidentally posted it as a thread. Within minutes I realized it AND a DUer friend saw it (the person I had intended to send the PM to - as a means to vent the annoyance) and called me to make sure I realized what I had done (gone snarkily public with a mocking one-liner) - and I immediately alerted on the thread to ask it to be locked/deleted. Only was up for a minute or two - but ... sorta compares to the scenario you describe.
