3. The "new" Elliott Smith set is pretty good

It's called "New Moon", and is a collection of various odds and sods from his Kill Rock Stars days (circa 1997). It's mostly acoustic, but there's a few rockers on it.

26. The Cat Empire - Two Shoes

They're an Aussie band; the album makes for great party music whether or not there's a crowd. Everything from Ska to (upbeat) jazz, to Kurt Weill-inspired stuff.

Speaking of Weill, I'm all over a new Nashville band called Ode Hazelwood. Eastern European folk-ish, with big band era vocals, somewhat existential lyrics.

33. Everyone needs to hear last year's Songs For Sixty Five Roses compilation

It's a collection of covers of songs written by North Carolina musicians performed by other NC musicians.

It's covers the way that covers should be done: completely new songs from existing material. The most striking example is Eric Bachman's very stark version of the shiny happy Let's Active pop song Every Word Means No. It was recorded alone in a hotel on the Outer Banks and you can almost taste the desolation and the loneliness, which make perfect sense if you actually listen to the lyrics.

There are plenty of other gems on it.

It's also a benefit for a very worthy cause. Proceeds go to cystic fibrosis research since the daughter of legendary musician John Plymale was diagnosed with that disease.
