8. Um, some perspective is in order...

Yeah, ok, I'm biased here...

a) Just because someone accepts an invitation by the First Lady doesn't mean they support the President's policies. Look, most people in America aren't as rabidly partisan as we are - most people WOULD accept such an invitation unless they really, really hated said President. The same goes for entertainers at Presidential functions - just because you perform for the President doesn't mean you endorse his policies. Some people put manners and class above politics. (I'm not saying that's always appropriate in every situation...)

Besides, what would you have Brady do, refuse the invite? The media shitstorm would be an enormous distraction during the time when Brady and the Pats are supposed to be preparing for the big game.

b) Brady is alleged to be a "moderate Democrat". He was supposed to host a fund raiser for John Kerry at one point - it's unclear whether it happened or not (see the thread in LBN). Until he starts spouting right wing talking points I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

c) There are probably Republicans on both teams. You guys prepared to not watch the Superbowl at all if one of the Panthers contributes $$$ to the GOP? :shrug:

I guess my point was that it's kind of silly for people to get their dander up just because someone attends the SOTU Address as a Guest of the First Lady, when their personal politics are unclear. Did any Republican athletes ever boycott meeting President Clinton when their teams won the championship? I don't recall it happening. It's a manners/class thing - you get an invite like that, you accept graciously, even if you don't much care for the hosts...

Anyway, in high school and college, I felt privileged to get to meet and talk with Barry Goldwater and John McCain, even though I disagree with them on, well, many, many things. The current resident is probably the only president in my lifetime where I would definitely think seriously about turning down the invite. And that's not a knock on Brady. At his age, I'm sure I would have gone.

It personally makes my skin crawl, as a Patriots fan, that the BFEE is pestering our quarterback when he should be preparing for the big game. And maybe the GOP IS trying to woo Brady and/or Patriots/NFL fans, the prospect of which also gives me the creeps. But if Brady refused the media would be all over him and the Pats would be more likely to lose because of the distractions. And I agree that he might just think its cool to see the speech and meet the First Lady without thinking too hard about the politics....

When I was in high school I and some other students got an award from our GOP governor - we went to the State House for a brief speech and a photo op. To this day I'm surprised that my staunchly Democratic parents have a photo up on their wall of me shaking hands with Mr. Olympia Snowe...
