| I Liked It Better When The Winter and Summer Games Were In The Same Year. |
|
Edited on Thu Jan-22-04 09:55 PM by arwalden
Every four years... instead of every two years alternating, as the are now.
The fact that we looked forward to and waited four WHOLE years for the Olympic games made them more special.

| 3. Financially I like it better that they're split |
|
I love to attend the Games in person, whenever possible. Much too expensive to fork out twice within 6 months.
Damn, I'm still not sure about Athens and have to decide soon. Salt Lake City was such a 600 mile snap from my Las Vegas base.
My Olympic gripe is that ABC dropped out after 1984. CBS and especially NBC never covered the feature events or provided the same spectacular look-and-feel as McKay and ABC did. I could live until 3000 and still not forgive Bob Costas for dishing out baseball scores and analysis during his nightly shift from Seoul in '88.

| 5. I can hardly bear to watch them anymore..The coverage SUCKS |
|
Just show me the damn sports.. Start at the beginning, and cover it to the end..
In the olden days, they did that.. Now they time delay everything, and show you a "Best of....." in teensy sound bytes with their inane commentary..
I used to love it when the olympics was on, because normally the stations went off air at around midnoght, but when the olympics was on, you could tune in at 2 am and see some Russian shotputter, or the swimming time trials..
They used to show EVERYTHING that they could.. I Actually liked seeing the 23rd place Pairs skaters' performances .. It made you really appreciate the "good ones" when they were on..

| 6. NBC ruined its coverage with ratings-driven research |
|
They decided women won't watch boxing, so the old Sugar Ray Leonard primetime coverage is kaput. Track and especially field took up too much time, so now they cop out with a 2-minute canned highlight package of the high jump, for example, instead of full live coverage.
I agree completely, it royally SUCKS. Especially compared to that of other countries. When I attended Barcelona and Sydney the local TV was FANTASTIC, a special channel(s) and live all day. Spanish TV in particular would show everything, even consolation (flight B) swimming races with the Spanish girl thrilled to have finished 6th but broken the national record.
Both of those years I had no idea how pathetic the coverage here had been, until my relatives and friends turned over VCR tapes and I reviewed them in disbelief.

| 9. Yeah and it was ridiculous... Women don't ROUTINELY watch |
|
boxing, but boxing as an international amateur event is quite different from commercial boxing. My guess is that a lot more women would wathc than they realized. Didtto with many of the other "slower" events-- that are not commonly on tv.

The coverage has largely spoiled the games for me. I still remember "cutesy" Paula Zahn's coverage when she was with CBC (puke) and then there was John Tesh! The latest to cover have largely escaped me, since I've been determined to ignore them...

Winter Games are completely alien to us. So we notice no difference.
Ice? What's ice?
