old laptop,newer dsl modem?

my nephew screwed up the (Vaio) computer,then installed Windows Vista,so now i don't have sound.
i borrowed a laptop from a friend,but the only hookup is for ethernet.
i looked on the back of the Vaio,and it has 2 regular phone jacks that say "MIDI/GAME" so i plugged in there,but i can't get internet on the laptop.
can anyone help?
BTW it's so i can download an old program for patch editing on my synthesizer.

1. If the VAIO doesn't have assloads of RAM, nothing is gonna work properly under Vista.

What's the borrowed laptop running? Odds are that "ethernet" port
is the one you want to use for a Modem connection.

Sorry I'm not much help; I'm only a "geek" with old & obsolete stuff.
TWO regular phone jacks on a modern PC? That's a new one on me! :shrug:

2. Get a USB internet connector

They cost about thirty bucks or so at any computer/electronics store, and they install in minutes.

You can also choose to get a PCMCIA internet card but they tend to be a bit more expensive.
