Contrary to popular opinion, it IS possible to teach kids how to behave in public (not be perfect angels, necessarily, but to avoid being rowdy, annoying, rude, and destructive).

I've actually seen well-behaved children with my own eyes!

The parents have two things in common:

1) They feel that they have the right to correct their children's behavior

2) They know how to do it effectively

We also once had a waitress almost bust a gut, when our 6 yr old ordered crab legs..Our kids have always been connoisseurs, and as long as they ate it all, they could order whatever they wanted.. We had kids who would order salmon, crab, grilled shrimp, NY steak..you name it :)

the oldest triplet (and despite rumors to the contrary :eyes: ) they do indeed exist, the oldest boy (who was barely 5 at the time, insisted on ordering the catfish from the adult menu. The other two contented themselves with stuff like hamburgers and chicken strips from the kids' menu. But not the eldest.

And he ate the whole thing. It was a big piece of catfish. We gaped in admiration of him.

And he still loves catfish. He ate it when we went out for dinner on my birthday last month.

They wanted REAL food.. and when they were a bit older, they seemed to try and out do each other in their choices..:)We never complained, as long as they ate what they ordered..
When we lived in New Mexico, the country club we belonged to, had monthly "crab cracks" and they learned about king crab at a very early age..
The Club served it in HUGE stainless bowls and it was "all you can eat", so they never bothered with the cole slaw & baked beans or dessert..

My youngest once told a waitress "I'll take the crayons, but I want a real menu"..(he was too young to read, but he still wanted a real menu :rofl:..)

I always had a good appetite at an early age (still do, for the most part). Whenever my grandmother was in town (she lived about 45 miles away) and we'd go to this one restaurant for dinner, I would order whatever Grandma wanted in a child's portion and she would order what I wanted in the adult portion. Then, we'd trade plates. I was only 8 when she died.

Exposing kids to good food is one of the best lessons a parent can give them, second to actually teaching them how to cook.

I loved going to nice restaurants as a kid and ordering weird stuff we never got at home. By the time I was 10, I had learned to eat raw oysters and clams, stuffed squid and escargot. By the time I was 20, I was paying for college by working in those same restaurant kitchens.

Of course, if your kids are disruptive little brats, I'll stab them with a salad fork. :P

by our table and tell us how well behaved they were. They enjoying eating at nice places and being treated as though they are more worthy than a kid's pack of nuggets.

Not that there is anything wrong with that. They've eaten their share of fast food, as well. Usually on the road when we couldn't find anything suitable.

years ago my friends and I decided to have dinner at Che Panasie. they brought along their four year old son, who even at that age was pretty well behaved in restaraunts. He happened to be going to the same pre-school as Alice Water's daughter. We were seated next to a couple who who were obviously having a "working dinner", their table was covered with papers with UC logos and from what we could eaves drop on they reviewing some sort of boring University policy. Both of these people kept making somwhat loud, catty remarks about children in fancy restaraunts.

At one point Alice came over to chat with us, she and the kids mother are friends. While she was chatting the woman from UC tapped her on the shoulder and told how inappropriate and annoying it is to have to deal with children in up scale restaraunts. With out missing a beat Alice said, " well these people are my friends, including Louis (the kid) if you have a problem with this you can always leave."
We had a wonderful meal.

My parents took my brothers and me to nice restaraunts a couple times a year. our mother wanted to "road test" our table manners.
