| I'm trying to watch braveheart for the first time |
|
yes, 9 years later and a lot of pressure from people, i'm finally watching it. am i wasting my time? should i not be posting on DU while watching it? but i'm finding it boring. this isn't a bashing mel gibson thread. i just want to know why it won best picture and why it was a crime that i hadn't seen it.

I found it dry and tedious as well. I can't really tell you why, I usually like historical films, but Braveheart just didn't do it for me either.

It's going to be a good warm up before seeing "Passion of Christ".

After reading the true story of William Wallace, my opinion of "best movie ever" changed.

...mostly, I guess because Mel Gibson is nice to look at, but also because I like that type of movie (I guess it's more "historical fiction" than "history").
But there's one point I want to make: YOU COULD NOT PAY ME TO WATCH THE ENDING OF THAT MOVIE AGAIN!!!!! Call me squeamish as much as you care to, but that scene was TOO MUCH for me!!! :wow:

William Wallace was executed by being drawn and quartered. Of course, that might've been a bit much, as drawing and quartering involves being dragged on a hurdle to the place of execution, THEN being hanged by the neck while being totally castrated by the executioner, THEN the condemned is gutted and his heart pulled out of his chest and held before his eyes so he can SEE it in the last few flickering seconds of consciousness; THEN the corpse is beheaded and quartered (cut into four parts); the head placed on a pike and the quarters distributed to various parts of the kingdom, to be displayed as a warning.
So, it probably wasn't as bad as it COULD'VE been.

But it is a gore fest. not sure who wins in the gore category, braveheart or gangs of new york. the battle scenes are pretty amazing, especially since they didn't have the special effects luxury that lord of the rings had.

If you're watching it strictly for entertainment, cool. But it should not be regarded as a factual biography.

| 14. I've always considered BH a "boy" flick |
|
I didn't get it at all but my son and husband loved it. My son has watched it several times and repeats lines from it. A big part of my problem with BH is Mel Gibson. I loathe him. So. It was very difficult for me to be impartial. I'd like to see the William Wallace's story done with a real actor and a more accurate screenplay.

| 15. I had friends that swore by the movie, then told me |
|
that if I couldn't see it on the big screen, I need not bother. I've tried to watch it, once, when I was the most depressed and most stressed I've ever been in my life, and I gave up after 30 minutes.
As for the Oscar, I think it was nominated the same year as some movies that were criminally overlooked (Seven springs to mind but I might be wrong, it was nine years ago), and the release date, etc, played to the BIG OSCAR BAIT fever of December/January. Maybe it deserved it, though--how can I say without seeing it?
