Are We "Earthlings" Or What?

It sounds so 1950's to refer to ourselves as "Earthlings"... I'm wondering if there's something else that's more accurate and less Sci-Fi sounding.

Earther? (Looks like I forgot to type Kitt.)
Terran? (Sounds too Trekkish.)
Third-Rockers? (Deadheads everywhere.)

Our first contact will be from beyond this solar system (the rest of our planets are pretty much unhabitable by higher life forms). In the literature, extra-solar races are referred to by their home star or galaxy.

We waste a monumental amount of radiant energy at a bewildering range of frequencies in terms of leakage into outer space, enough, probably, to annoy the neighbours.

I suspect our first visit will be from the astral cops saying "turn it down".

When we say "Earthling" we're always referring to humanoids. What about dogs, cats, cows, trees, whales...?
