which direction would windows face to get the least amount of sun?

but Southern exposure is the MOST light. I would say east would be the next most, since the sun sets in the west.

I'm a natural night person and I do fine wearing sunglasses if I stay outside too long - it's not so bad - I didn't mean to imply I'm some sort of shut-in, I just find being out in the sun not a fun thing to do :)

In fact, they get NO light directly...

They just get indirect light, which is lovely...

East gets morning...

West gets...oh, you already know!

South gets a lot of winter light...probably second in order of the most ...

In Colorado we don't use salt, but when I lived in Toronto they would practically encrust the whole city with salt at the first sign of snow. Sometimes they'd spread it on really thick, and then nothing would happen and people would slip and fall on all the salt. What's the point in that? People fall down, cars corrode into nothing, and my pants were constantly salt stained.

In Colorado we wisely use sand. Yeah it scrapes up all the lane lines and pits your windshield, but dammit, your clothes stay clean and your chassis doesn't look like the "before" image on a CLR commercial!

and south if you're in the southern hemisphere.

If you won't want sunlight in the window in the morning, face west. If you don't want it in the evening, face east.

Or plant some trees... :-)

if the window is under a projecting roof and you're not too far north. It sounds counter-intuitive, but the sun is high in the sky when it passes south of us, and so the light doesn't come in directly. East is probably less intense than west, since the direct light from the east arrrives when the day is cooler - it feels better then. Of course, the amount of sunlight from all directions is going to vary through the year.

I'd recommend north windows, an awning or eaves over south-facing windows, and trees to the west and east of the house...

24. if you have big windows, down here it doesn't much matter, you

will get bright. Think about this too: light = heat and August, and therefore avoid west facing anything unless there is deep cover on the balcony or overhang. Those high placed horizontal windows will let in much less light. Consider the placement of the other buildings in the complex, and make good use of their natural shading.

Pay attention to the placement of your sliding glass/french patio doors. They will let in the most light, and therefore heat.

Skittles you would love my house. We face south but there is a humongous tree in front of the house and the front door is recessed. My rear patio is covered and there is a large shade tree next door and one in my back yard too. The end result is that my den and family room are quite cavelike, even in winter when the trees have shed. The west /southwest end of my house is the unwindowed garage wall. I think I have the darkest house in town; am getting skylights this year, just for some ambient light in the morning. I have to have lights on to do ANYTHING no matter what time of day it is, except in the front bedroom and this small bedroom/office, as they have really good window placement. Excellent African Violet growing conditions.. LOL my attic rooms have the best light in the house because they are up high and catch the light well.

So for us: North is least, East is next if placement is correct, then south, then west. If you are gone at sunset, then west won't make much difference. I am assuming you work second shift? IF you don't you probably should LOL

Then north gets the least, east and west the second most, and south the most. (however, depending on how close you are to the equator, the east and west windows could get more sun than south, since the sun rises higher and higher in the sky the further south one goes, and so less light makes it through windows). In the northern US, my rubric holds. It probably starts to change down about Georgia.

I hear ya about the fucking sun - I hate it. My patio faces east, and unless it's an overcast day, I can't open the *(#$& shades in the morning. it's nice at night, though, because the house blocks the sun so I can actually sit out there and enjoy it.

I know now that when I build my house, the deck and the living room and the floor to ceiling windows go on the north side. The south side gets the greenhouse.

I used to love to sit on the lanai in Hawaii and read the morning paper, drink my coffee, and just chill; I could do that because the mountain blocked the sun and it was comfortable out there. Now, though, I can't use the patio in the morning because the *(#&$ sun drenches it in light. Can't read the paper in that much fucking light, nor tolerate to sit in it.
