| Watched Children of Men. Won't be able to sleep for a while now. Shit. |
|
And to think I picked that one because I figured it'd be less bloody and disturbing than Last King of Scotland.
Holy fuck, that was something.

| 1. That movie really wasn't what I expected it to be. |
|
Plenty disturbing, but ultimately pointless. :evilfrown:

| 2. You mean because there's no resolution? |
|
Does she really escape? Do more people have babies? Were more having them already?
Yeah, but I looked on it as a typical sci-fi thing where exploring the milieu was as important as the plotline itself. The point wasn't what becomes of mother and baby, it's what might happen in a society with no future.
Though the timing of Theo's death is hokey. That bothered me, how one minute he's okay enough to row, and moments later he's dead. A gut wound would have been bloodier and more incapacitating.

| 3. Every good story has a beginning, a middle, and an end. (not necessarily in that order) |
|
That story, although well-told, was just one long MIDDLE. I was not satisfied with the experience.

| 7. Read the book, which was much better. |
|
I thought the movie was OK, but the book was first-rate, and actually made sense as a story. After reading the book the movie was a little disappointing. Also, in the book it was the men, not the women, who were infertile -- hence the name "Children of Men."

| 6. Michael Caine's performance was, quite simply, breathtaking. |
|
In a career jam-packed with great performances, this one of his really knocked me out. His final moments with his wife broke my heart. I almost couldn't stand it.

I had to watch something funny afterwards. Gave me an eerie feeling after watching it!

| 9. the technical merits of Children of Men are woefully underappreciated |
|
there are some long single-camera shots in there (the scene in the car when Julianne Moore is killed and the battle in the prison camp) that are unparalleled in motion picture history.
