My number is a lot of repeating digits (you can dial me by using only 3 buttons without area code, 4 with) and I've since discovered that this situation is a magnet for wrong numbers. Not to mention all of the calls I was getting from a collection agency looking for the previous owner of this number, or someone who gave that number as his own.
It started with the collection agence as soon as I got the new number. I was working shifts then, and they somehow managed to always call during my sleep time. Because of my work, I had to answer all calls- asleep or not, and usually ended up on the line with some collection agent telling me that I was lying to them. One of them even told me "well, if you AREN'T so and so then give me YOUR name and social security number so I can verify." That's when I came unglued and demanded to speak to his boss, who turned out be be just as obnoxious. Went up the line a few times until I got a reasonable sounding person and informed them that the next time I was contacted by one of his minions and called a liar, there would be legal action. "I understand. You will not be bothered again," he said, and that was the end of it.
But the miscellaneous wrong numbers are, seriously, a daily event in my life. A few weeks ago, I started getting a call from the same number at 3 am every morning. Usually I didn't answer but the few times I did, there was a drunk on the other end. When I got fed up with that one, I waited until about 7 am and started calling back- the time between calls would vary from 2 minutes to maybe 10. Kept it up for 3 hours, usually hanging up the times they answered but a few times asking for Jack Daniels, until I guess they turned off their phone. A few hours later, I called back and he answered. "Did you get the hint, asshole?" I asked. "Yeah- Fuck you!" he replied. And I haven't heard from him since.
I'd change my number if it wasn't such a damn hassle.
