a guy I used to work with called me tonight to ask me if his ex's son happened to get a job where I work. I of course had to ask why.......

so, they aren't divorced yet, but they go to court in January. I knew they had split, and she took everything in the house with her. Apparently, one afternoon, the guy I worked with, walked in on his wife fucking her 18 y.o. son.

so, there you go. My rather disturbing story of the night.

Trying to link that to incest is the result of some weird notions we have in this country, and a lot of ignorance and cultural taboos that predate modern genetics.

Some facts:

No European country prohibits marriage between first cousins. It is also legal throughout Canada and Mexico to marry your cousin. The U.S. is the only western country with cousin marriage restrictions, and even in the US, half the states allow it, including those with the largest populations. In other words, it's legal for most people here, as well.

It is estimated that 20 percent of all couples worldwide are first cousins. It is also estimated that 80 percent of all marriages historically have been between first cousins.

Current studies indicate that cousin couples have a lower ratio of miscarriages -- perhaps because body chemistry of cousins is more similar.

The rate of birth defects is about the same as a woman over 40 having children, and less than the rate for people having in Vitro. The normal rate of defects is 2-3%, and if you are also first cousins, there is an added rate of 1.7 - 2.8%. Meaning that if you are friends with a couple and one of their kids has a birth defect, the odds lean toward it NOT being related to them being cousins at all, more likely just one of those things that happens in life.

In the Victorian era, it was quite common, and approved.

Queen Victoria married her first cousin. Charles Darwin married his cousin.

In literature--in WUTHERING HEIGHTS, a woman married (in succession) two first cousins. In Louisa Alcott's ROSE IN BLOOM, Rose decided to marry her cousin Mack. In "Locksley Hall" the narrator and his cousin Amy fell in love, but she married someone else.

I'm not married to my first cousin or anything (one is too right-wing, two could be my sons), but I don't get that Americans just have this "Ick" reaction to it.

Personally, I'm not gay, so it doesn't float my boat to be with another person of the same gender. But I support their equal right to be together. If I saw someone on DU posting "ewww, I find gay marriage to be icky" I'd speak out against it. They have a right to their personal reaction, but once they publish their thoughts on a forum, I view it as spreading prejudice (endorsing the view that it's icky) to other people.

So I think it's better to just leave it as "a matter of choice" and harmful to take the extra time to post "still gives me the icks."

If a gay person here reads post after post saying "gay marriages are icky", or posts saying "gay marriage is like incest between a mother and their kid" how would that make them feel? That's how cousins who are married feel, when they see this reaction again and again.

But when I was playing devil's advocate on another forum years ago, I came across a website and forum advocating for nondiscriminatory laws for cousin marriages, and I learned a ton about stereotypes (lots of ignorant redneck hillbilly stereotyping, and we can see some of that in this thread, with the West Virginia comment), about genetics, and about prejudice. I came to be friends with a woman who was interviewed on the issue for Frontline, or some similar show. Modern research has debunked the "your kids will be born with 5 eyes, 13 fingers, and mentally ill" garbage.

On the stereotyping as hicks thing, it's insulting on so many levels. It's insulting to people in West Virginia on the whole. I don't know when we learned that people are backwards and icky based on what state they live in. It's incredibly disrespectful (and arrogant) to other cultures (which is most of the world) to imply that those people are backwards. And of course it's disrespectful of people who are married to their cousins to imply that they must be more stupid or backwards than you are.

I've known a few divorcing couples where one party said some unbelievably outrageous things that were completely untrue. Whether it was out of hate or spite or a desire for money or just being a tad unhinged, I don't know, but it happens.

Could be he's trying to set the stage to avoid alimony. Maybe not; but I'd recommend that you avoid passing judgement until after the court has heard the case.

but, I have serious doubts. It's his stepson. Who has been in state custody for most of his life. Then came home at 18. Nobody in the house has an education over the 8th grade. Including the guy I used to work with. And most likely, his mother was abused as a kid. I know for a fact that she was raped by a family member when she was a teen. She told me that years ago.

the boy has been in custody of the state for most of his life. Didn't come back home until he was 18, which was just this past summer. The reasons for him being in custody of the state I'm unsure of. I do know that his mom had to give up her parental rights because she couldn't take care of him.
