Let's say you've been invited to a holiday party / open house. Invitation says soda provided and guests may "choose" to bring an alcoholic beverage to share...
It's very important that you make the right impression and not fudge things up.
What do you bring?

If you're not sure, bring something but leave it in the car until you know what the score is.

Everyone loves egg nog. And if someone refuses to drink it, then you know they shouldn't be at the party. You can inform the host/hostess and they can toss the egg nog hater out on their ass. Everyone wins!

If they frown at it, call it a conversation starter. Otherwise, pour freely.

"Soda provided" probably just means they don't want to spend the money on booze--it can really add up if you're inviting a lot of folks. Then again, my wife thinks I'm an alcoholic.

Grapes in season.
That was their slogan back in the late 60s. Like you had to advertise to winos!

| 14. A nice wine would work well. People who like some alcohol |
|
when they socialize can have some, but it's not a "get drunk" kind of drink. And clearly, from what you posted, the host doesn't want people getting drunk. :)

| 15. They're either too cheap to spring for entertaining their guests, or wish for an alcohol-free night. |
|
Either way, they're wrong - if you invite people, then pay for the booze if you don't mind if they drink alcohol. If you don't want them to drink alcohol, then the invite should say nothing about drinks - they'll find out when they get there; and any guest that would complain is a boor who should go off the invitation list in the future.
But, since your hosts said that you can bring alcohol to share, I get the impression that they are not anti-alcohol, just anti- spending money on their guests.
So, if you're going to bring something to share, then don't bring anything that would need to be mixed in a cocktail shaker or blender - bring beer, wine, whisky, whiskey, etc.: stuff that can be poured straight from the bottle into a glass, either neat or on the rocks.

Is this a case where you can ask the host/hostess (beforehand) azackly what they meant, because you're not clear on what they said, and you certainly don't want to cause problems? Or you could phrase it as "Anything specific you want I should bring; like ice, or ginger ale?" (you're being helpful and courteous...that's usually a good impression)
