15. I gotta tell my lizard story.

There I was watching tv and I hear this hissing sound in the hallway, and saw two of my four cats racing in that direction. Being in S.CA, there is always the minuscule chance that a small rattler might get in so I chase after them to save their stupid little asses. I get there and they have this four or five inch lizard cornered.

This poor little guy is standing up on his front legs hissing at these four huge cats and backing them down. I have never seen anything so brave in my whole life. He was just awesome! I was so proud of him.

I got the cats out of the way and captured the lizard and let him out, and he didn't even lose his tail.

...and the big story turned out to be widespread use of streambed hyporheic zones by juvey Pac giants. Damned things would get into our traps-- which were only accessible from underground-- and eat all the arthropods.

49. I found one crossing the street one morning, years ago...

and brought him inside for awhile, so my older boy, who was a toddler at the time, could see him for a week or so. We had a big 75 gallon terrariumthat we put him in for a temporary home. One day I was involved in chores, and noticed that things were just a little too quiet. I went looking for my son, and found him in the terrarium with the turtle, tossing dirt and leaves around. He hadn't touched the turtle...he just wanted to play in the dirt!

since you described them like thorns, yep. Not that kind of treehopper (I'm assuming it was Umbonia sp.) but I studied systematics of Membracidae (treehoppers) and for my thesis I revised a subfamily of treehoppers. I ended up describing 2 new genera and about 70 new species. Whew! All that for an M.S.

I found a salamander for the first time a couple of weeks ago, when it was warm and rainy. I was so excited, I'm digging a pond so we'll have frogs and this was just as good!! So I 'helped' my new little mander buddy by taking him to the edge of the yard and putting him behind the vegetable bed, thought I did him such a favor. Then the next day I was cleaning up the leaves where I'd found him and there I found his friend, another slippery green cutey. I tried to catch it so I could move it to the same place but it went under the deck :(
So I think I wrecked at least two salamanders' lives :cry:

Even if the one didn't want to be relocated, i'm sure he/she could find his/her way back. They have an amazing sense of direction and homing capability!

Well my memory sucks but your name will remind me.

I FAILED at getting it dug last year and now I'll just have to wait til Spring. Since we're on a hill where there's no water, the two salamanders made me SO excited. There's a stream through the neighborhood but it's about 1/3 mile away, the fresh water helps a lot of animals even though it's so crowded here.

My aunt also told me the little salamanders had sense to find each other! I sure hope.

Misumena vatia, a type of crab spider. The females can turn from bright yellow to pure white, depending what kind of flower they're on!

He was the state herpetologist, but he got roped in all sorts of counts - he counted everything from snakes to fish. He loved the official bird counts the best - he had a keen eye. RIP Mr T, you tough us more than just woodcraft.
