FRISKY cinemagoers in Shanghai will be able to pick up a free condom at the box-office on Valentine's Day in a gesture welcomed by many but condemned by others in a still conservative China.

The Broadband International Cineplex at Shanghai's Times Square said 3000 condoms will be available on Saturday and customers can help themselves, the Shanghai Daily reported.

"We believe in a developed city like Shanghai that condoms are no longer a taboo for our customers," said an employee who identified himself as Dong.

"Providing condoms supports a healthy and secured sex life and can arouse awareness about safe sex and AIDS prevention."
