| Strange lyrics But I love Laurie Anderson |
|
O Superman. O judge. O Mom and Dad. Mom and Dad. O Superman. O judge. O Mom and Dad. Mom and Dad. Hi. I'm not home right now. But if you want to leave a message, just start talking at the sound of the tone. Hello? This is your Mother. Are you there? Are you coming home? Hello? Is anybody home? Well, you don't know me, but I know you. And I've got a message to give to you. Here come the planes. So you better get ready. Ready to go. You can come as you are, but pay as you go. Pay as you go. And I said: OK. Who is this really? And the voice said: This is the hand, the hand that takes. This is the hand, the hand that takes. This is the hand, the hand that takes. Here come the planes. They're American planes. Made in America. Smoking or non-smoking? And the voice said: Neither snow nor rain nor gloom of night shall stay these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds. 'Cause when love is gone, there's always justice. And when justice is gone, there's always force. And when force is gone, there's always Mom. Hi Mom! So hold me, Mom, in your long arms. So hold me, Mom, in your long arms. In your automatic arms. Your electronic arms. In your arms. So hold me, Mom, in your long arms. Your petrochemical arms. Your military arms. In your electronic arms.

You're correct...
These are strange lyrics!
I like how they evolve, though...
Hey...
Look for a Big Important Thread from me tomorrow afternoon, OK?

While visiting San Francisco (early 1990?) I stopped by a place called Slim's to see a friend who was working coat-check there. Wonderful soul that Karen is, after we'd said our hello's she urged me to go downstairs to catch the end of a set by Ms. Anderson. It was wonderful, an unexpected treat! http://daz.com/artists/Laurie%20Anderson.html

and live even more so. A mix of music and performance art. I adore her. My lover told me he didn't know who she was - what did he think I've been playing on his sound system for years?

I begin almost every dance class that I teach with "Born, Never Asked" as a slow warm-up. All of my young-pup co-workers know who she is...justice is served. :)

| 6. I know this English guy who was driving around in the South. |
|
And he stopped for breakfast one morning somewhere in southeast Georgia. He saw “grits” on the menu. He’d never heard of grits so he asked the waitress, “What are grits, anyway?” She said, “Grits are fifty.” He said, “Yes, but what are they?” She said, “They’re extra.” He said, “Yes, I’ll have the grits, please.”

| 7. ROFL I *KNEW* you meant O Superman even before I opened the thread! |
|
My friends and I used to quote this song all the time in college. "Here come the planes! They're American planes. Made in America." Oh the memories.
Laurie rocks.

is especially chilling n light of later events. I was listening to "Big Science" about 6 years ago, and those lines just jumped out at me.
Best wishes to Laurie and Lou.

| 9. I heard her first demo tape |
|
A friend of mine's sister went to school with her. They were both art students at UNI (University of Northern Iowa) she helped her record O superman and a few other songs to take to record companies. I thought it was the biggest load of crap I had ever heard. I was 16 at the time so I had no taste. I respect her but still don't like the music.

That gave me a flashback to 1981. College, drugs, Laurie Anderson on the stereo. Good times.
