| on the other hand, highest tip you've ever given |
|
once I was at a Perkin's with my buddies as drunk as I could be and still be able to walk to the table. I ordered only a malt worth around $3. This Perkin's was known for having gorgeous waitresses (hence why we went there all the time). This night we had Beth, one of the best. I gave her $5 and said it was for being so hot. That's 166% tip.

to people without a piece of s**t player's club card. I played at the Four Queens one night and had a friend with me. I turned $50 into over $400 in under an hour and as I got up to leave my friend said I should ask for a comped meal so I did. We went to the upstairs cafe and each ordered a TON of food. The bill came to almost $80 and this was back in 1990 or 1991. I tipped the waiter $30 of my winnings because the restaurant was totally dead and I knew he wasn't going to be bringing much home.

I have worked for food sevice a long time ago. I never got tips because it was against the rules to get them. An the pay was lousy! So when the place allows them to take tips I try to make sure its a good one, Like a bar I will give a dollar tip for a dollar drink. Sometimes I only give 50% like a dollar for a $2 drink. other Times I give at lest 20%!

I won't go over 25%. Extremely high tipping is flaunting your money, which I find offensive. I also think that tipping a waitress for being "hot" is an insult, especially if you tell her that is the reason. Why not offer $30 for a lapdance, Mr. Bigshot? If the waitress/waiter is competent, attentive and courteous the 25% is theirs along with a hearty compliment and thank-you.
On edit: the exception to the 25% rule is for orders less than 4 dollars. They usually get $1, but a $0.65 bagel can get the change from the dollar as long as after getting the bagel I don't ask them to lift a damn finger for me (no water, no nothing).

I didn't have loads of money (I'm a college student!), it just was more than the meal. and as said, I was drunk. She seemed to like me on later visits, so I doubt she cared.

Offend me all the way to the bank, baby! And if only the person paying and the waitperson know how big the tip is, is it really showing off? If so, who does it hurt?
Agree on the "because you're hot" criticism, though.

| 6. Finest bit of group table karma EVER...... |
|
This was about 15 yrs ago at a fine little all night establishment in Georgetown (DC) the Au Pied du Couchon (AKA The Pig's Foot) The crew of friends that I was running with at the time made a point of hanging out at the Pig's Foot at least one night a week (They have the BEST coffee and the chocolate mousse is to DIE for!... The night manager also bears a disturbing resemblence to Elden Tyrell from Bladerunner..... but I digress :) )
ANYhoo.... we occupied a corner booth for the better part of an evening (9pm to around 2am) people were coming and going; ordering drinks, food, whatever. The table population ebbed and flowed, ranging from 5 to 12(!) members. Whenever someone would leave, they would toss some cash my way (for some unknown reason, I was "designated cashbox" for the night) In the past, this state of affairs usually left me with a large chunk o' change to come up with at the end of the evening to make up for the folks who order an entree and drinks and then toss $5 into the pot. :grr: At the end of THIS particular evening however.....
I called for the check. The total was for $98 and change (apparently we were eating light that night) I counted the pile of cash in front of me. $183 and change...... :wow:
I said "What the hell" handed the waitron the wad, bid her a good evening and walked out the door.
The next week when our crew walked in, we were warmly greeted, shown to our usual spot where hot coffee and warm croissants (with butter and strawberry jam no less!) magically appeared unbidden to our table.
Racked up lots o' good restaurant karma that night! :toast:

with 22 people. At the end of the night, one of the guys told us what we owed. It seemed very high, but we all paid. It turned out he had forgotten the mandatory tip put on groups of 6 or more, so we tipped double; must have been around 40%.

| Score one back for the "mean" Brits...... |
|
There's a really great Thai restaurant near my old place in London. A group of about 10 of us went there one night and we all had a couple of beers, a main course, rice and shared a few sidedishes between us. At the end of the meal we asked for the bill and they told us it was about 60 pounds. We said "No way, it's much more than that" and told them what we'd all had to eat.
They came back and told us that no, they were only going to charge us 60 pounds, so we all dug in our pockets and insisted leaving 10 pounds each.......which is a 66% tip by my calculation.
Worst tippers in the world, eh?
:-)

Leaving $2 tip on a $3 bill is a 66% tip.....you left an additional 66% on top of the charge. OK, so that means that you left 166% of the price asked for, but only 66% of that was a tip!
Mathematical pedantry........marvellous.
:-)
P.
P.S. Just for completeness, if you meant that you gave her the $5 in addition to the $3 for the drink, then that would indeed have been a 166% tip......I'm not sure what you meant. Sorry!

and then I realized that he must have meant that he paid the three dollars and then gave the waitress a five dollar bill, thus 5=1.66*3, and it is a 166%.
I hate the word maths. The truncated form of mathematics is math. But I guess you guys can say it incorrectly if you want to ;-)

I won a $1600.00 jackpot on a dollar machine in Vegas, and while I was waiting to be paid, I took soome coins from the tray and played the machine next to it.. It hit for $960.00.. That was a VERRRRRY good night..
I tipped the attendant $20 for each win and when we went for our comped dinner at BillyBobs Steakhouse, the waiter was so cool to us and we were having so much fun, I gave him a $100 as we left ..
It would have only lasted a few minutes in a machine, and he deserved it :)

My GF and I are both college students that have worked in food service over the last few years. We don't go out that much, btu we make sure that we at least tip 25% when we do an often more. Food service is really hard, and one rude customer can piss you off for a night, but one really nice couple leaving a really nice tip will always make your day.
If you can't leave a nice tip, eat in.

$10 for no more than a $15-$20 meal. Waitress really hustled her butt off for us.
The best tip I ever got was $15 for twisting balloons at a yacht club last week. Not bad considering I made sculptures for only three people at the table and used no more than 5 balloons to make a motorcycle, a dog, and a hat. Each balloon costs 5 cents for a total cost of a quarter. :)

My best friend and I used to go to the IHOP on the corner of 19th and University in Lubbock when we were undergrads. We'd sit up talking all night on the perpetually refilled coffee and tea. 89 cents for the coffee and 89 more cents for the tea. That's $1.78. But since we were there taking up a table all night we'd leave a big tip - usually around $5 dollars for each waitress we had (sometimes there was more than one). If we only had 1 waitress that's like a 281% tip. :)
