21. Jeepers, There's Some Solid Stuff There!

I'll just pick off a few that I'd whole-heartedly second. I'd take Highway 61 over Blonde on Blonde, either one of Marley's first albums over Legend, BB's Live at the Regal over Best of, and so forth, but all of these are top tier.

--Every song is a treasure, and the damn thing is...he's got tons more stuff in his catalog! In the Jungle Groove, JB's Funky People...

Sam Cooke - The Man and His Music (RCA, 1986)
--I love this album! Be careful, its outta print now.

Judy Henske - High-Flying Bird (Elektra, 1964)
--I can't believe someone else has heard of Henske!!!!!!!!!! What a voice! And they finally got around to putting her on CD!

Van Morrison - Astral Weeks (Warner Brothers, 1968)
--As a music loving dork, I always debate myself over which album is better, this or Moondance.

Sly & The Family Stone - There’s A Riot Goin’ On (Epic, 1971)

29. On music writers....

Yes, I like Peter Guralnick. Jimmy Guterman has written some good stuff too, as have some of the lesser-knowns like Steve Propes and Pete Grendysa.

And as angry as some music fans become over the mere mention of his name, I also like Dave Marsh (who I happen to know personally). In fact, I'd cite Marsh's 1989 book, "The Heart of Rock and Soul: The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made," as one of the biggest influences on my musical tastes.

37. I'm Looking At It On My Bookshelf!

Great book. I've probably read it 3x over since I got it.

Probably the most influential for me would be Christgau's guide to the 80's, because it was the first time I ever thought of records as aesthetic objects to be thought about. Before then I basically bought anything with at least 3 songs I liked (not the most systematic system).

Another influence is the Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock. Great essays.

If you ever get the chance, check out Lester Bangs writing about Astral Weeks in Psychotic Reaction. It is the single most beautiful, and even profound writing on music I've ever come across. And his essay on Bowie's Station to Station is pretty incredible too.

This lady has the chops to be a great one. She's getting more into jazz with each album. But all her discs are great.

32. Paul Cebar & the Milwaukeeans...

(am I their only fan on DU?)

Specifically, "Upstroke for the Downfolk", but all of Paul Cebars stuff is outstanding. He takes everything that is good and true about American (North and Latin) music (plus some African stuff) and mixes it all together to produce a uniquely groovy sound with highly literate lyrics. Some funk, some R&B, some rock, some Latin rhythms, some soul, some blues. It's all good...I guess the best way to describe it is party music for adults. "Suchamuch" is a recent live album, also highly recommended.

4. Right-click once on the highlited address. This will bring up a smaller menu box-

5. In that box, left-click once on "copy". You now have the URL of the picture ready to paste.

6. When you are composing your message and the cursor reaches the point where you want to place the pic, right-click once. This will bring up the small menu again.

7. This time, select "paste". The URL for the pic will be placed there, and when you post your message, the pic will display.

I think all the Corrs' CDs are wonderful. But Forgiven, Not Forgotten is probably too forgotten, so that one was a good one to mention.

Completely agree with Cindy Alexander, New Pornographers (genius pop,) Radiohead's The Bends, and Dar Williams, too. I'd put in Guster's Keep It Together, and haven't bought the new David Gray yet. And this doesn't cover all the ones I've seen and agree with here.
