We seemed to split into three "generations". The older two were one, the middle three were another, and the "babies" were the third group. The older ones were the trailblazers, we middle three were fairly mellow, and the babies - well they were awfully pampered.

One can be the youngest, one can be the oldest -- but untold numbers can be the "middle". We have two middles in my family. I wish there was another term.

Study any of the great birth order theorists (Adler is good; Kevin Leman is still alive and a lot of fun to read -- great sense of humor) and they will tell you that in a multi-child family, the oldest almost always has the highest IQ. No wonder there are so many firstborns here at DU. :D

There's ten years between me and my next oldest sibling ...
I must admit, I didn't often feel hard done by simply because I was the youngest and, at times, I definitely benefited as there were some things I grew up with that simply didn't exist when my siblings were that age.
(Edit: Sorry - thought you were replying to me ... oops ...)

but I loved every minute of it. It's the perfect way to have 3 kids. The oldest gets recognition for being the oldest. The youngest gets recognition for being the youngest. And the one "stuck" in the middle was me! But because I was the only girl, I got spoiled in my own little way!

I have mixed feelings about being a middle child/only girl...my parents were way too liberal with the boys. When Saturday night came, I was the one who had to stay in the house while the boys could party until the sun came up. Talk about someone who couldn't wait to leave home!!!

in the words of one of my sisters after the birth of the youngest,
"Betsy is the oldest, ('I'm'...meaning my MEAN sister) am the middle, and Susannah is the youngest". "Well what does the make me"? I asked. "Nothing; you're nothing", she replied. :nopity:
I am the third of 4 girls. Am I really "nothing" or can there be more then 1 middle child? :-(

EDIT: rotten grammar.
