Danny Gatton - Greatest guitar player you probably never heard of.

Called the Master of the Telecaster. He died in 1994, so we'll never know what kind of commercial success he would have had. Here's a little sample that shows some of his range. This clip also has a killer sax solo at 5:10, but I don't know who the musician is.

Blues, Jazz, C-W, Rock. Wicked slide player too. In this clip he's playing with a full beer bottle, then plays while he's cleaning the spilled beer of the neck with a towel. Amazing.

...and it was a tragic day when he followed in the footsteps of Roy Buchanan (although some still think to this day that Buchanan DID NOT hang himself in that jail cell).

You probably own this, and if you don't, you should...it took some serious moxie for Gatton to sign up as Gordon's axe man in the wake of Link Wray's departure. The album's title is a direct reference to Gatton.

13. Hadn't heard of him -- here are some others

Danny's definitely got the all-around mojo, judging from those clips. Got the chops, of course, lotta feeling and a strong jazz ear.

My faves in the greatest-guitar-players-you-never-heard of category:

- Strong blues, also knew his way around a Telecaster.

Amos Garrett - Incredibly melodic; reminiscent of Roy Buchanan, but more concise. Another Telecaster master.

Mick Taylor - (Well, you probably heard of the band he was in) Graduate of John Mayall's school of the blues dues. Consummate rock guitarist, IMO. He's visceral the way the Stones are, but wonderfully cerebral, too. His solos read like a hot geometric proof -- Isaac Newton with a Les Paul. Check out his slide solo in this live version of "Love in Vain."

Thanks for the links on Davis and Garrett. Davis' death was a great loss too.

I personally think The Stones music peaked during the Taylor years. It certainly never got any more melodic.

He would have been more recognized. Those years were pretty tough if you wern't putting out metal or pop.
