| Poll question: Am I The Only Adult In The Western World Who Can't Tie A Tie? |
|
If anyone had to see my room, they'd notice on the back of my door is a tie rack with about 30 completely tied and knotted ties.
I've tried for about the last three years to tie a tie properly and I just can't do it.
I'm pretty sure I have a learning disability in this regard.
Am I the only one. Please tell me I'm not the only one.

| 11. What type of knot do you use |
|
Double Windsor, Half Windsor, or Four in Hand?
A Double Windsor is a pain in the ass, the other two are pretty simple.

(I'm a little late in saying that... been on eof those weeks!)
I've had to wear a tie maybe 20 times in my life, so I've only kept the most vague memory of how to do it. I'm like Magic Rat, I'll tie that sucker up and leave it there year-round! :)
ties suck anyway... can I get an AMEN???

it's amazing how a grown man can sputter and fume over whether or not I have a piece of cloth tied around my neck...
see, without the tied cloth, I'm not a professional. I can royally SUCK at my job, but if I have the fabric, I'm in for life

Just look at bu$h-- always immaculately dressed, including tie, but completely vapid upstairs, where it counts-- the textbook example of an empty suit!

This applies to tying the four in hand knot (the easiest of the three).
The Sack Rule:
When tying a four in hand, bring the point of the fat end of the tie down to the base of your sack, and the finished product will be the perfect length every time. :)

We had to wear a tie every day. I learned how to tie one in the first grade. The Windsor knot was my favorite because it was even on both sides. I don't wear a tie any more except for special funerals.

Here I am, a fifty-year-old man who can't knot a tie. Pathetic! I'm a college graduate, for goodness sake. I only wear a tie maybe twice a year (I'd wear one more if I knew how to knot it), so it ain't so bad. My excuse: In my formative years my father never got to teach me to knot a tie, since I was such a hippie.
Worse, I think, is my pitiful inability to cboose a tie that's even close to the current style or that goes with my shabby wardrobe.

and I'd probably have a hard time learning if my experiences tying my Girl Scout kerchief were any indication! I also could never do a decent job tying a sash behind my back -- and when I was a kid, girls' dresses always had sashes, which boys were forever untying! Maybe we lack the "tying" gene, or, more likely, we either weren't taught at the right age or weren't taught in a way we understood.
I could, however, make you a tie -- I could sew one from fabric or weave one from yarn. And I could embroider it, too. ;-)

if so... that makes tieing anything difficult bc its all mirror-reversed.
But still... pratice until you get it.
on edit: start with the Windsor, its one of the easier ones, or at least, its the only one that looks decent on me.
Boo to skinny ties and skinny knots, not on a guy my size

I've never gotten the hang of it. Thank goodness I work at a job where a tie isn't necessary.

Look up the Pratt Knot-Shelby Knot. That's the one I use on the rare occasions I wear a tie, and it'e absolutely idiot-proof. Makes a great looking knot with little effort.

Well, I should say I never learned how to do it properly. I cannot tie one today, I'm so pathetic I have to have my wife tie it for me. I'd be like the poster in that I'd have a collection of tied ties if I had to wear them.
I can't tie a bow tie, either.

For my entire life, I've worn ties very infrequently: only once or twice per year. Somehow, though, I still remember how to do it. It does take a few times to get it to look right, though. :-)
