| I just stuffed most of an 18 1/2 lb turkey in a crock pot! |
|
oh boy that may cause a few copycats
I have a double size crock and I just put all but the back in there. Now it is cooking out on the back porch. Roast turkey on a 100 degree day without heating the kitchen!:woohoo:

Either Target, or wallyworld, I guess. I am pretty sure I didn't buy it on line... It's a Hamilton Beach (are they still around?)
You can do two whole chickens. And the other day I ended up doing a pork roast with chipotle in a couple hours - it cooks about the same as my oven on high - a little too fast but I'm learning to work with it. I would like to find one that you can actually leave ALL day, but with most new ones that will overcook the food and turn it to mush.
Did it rain up your way? We have a 30% chance and it is still and HOT, clouds building - may get a little today or tomorrow.

But thanks for the crock pot tip, I should probably invest. We're having a hot spell, a bit of rain in the afternoons, but it's expected to be dry for a while. I do love the desert heat and mountain air up here. Hope all is well...

just a cheapo I must have got on sale last winter. I usually buy 5 or 6 when they go on sale and use 'em through the year. One more left.
I used to raise a couple every year so I could have a fresh thanksgiving bird, but they would always get so huge - (talking like 65 lbs liveweight!) This is the first year I have had new birds of any kind in a long time, not sure why I didn't order a few turkeys. maybe because this was my first try with banties too.

All those dishes you cook sound really good, maybe you could give me some recipes when you have the time?

I go there for help pretty often:P
My cooking is kind of ranch free-style, feed the masses cheap. But glad to share any help I can.
What do you like?

you know with a crock pot you can just throw a bunch of whatever you have in there and cook it. Then eat it in tortillas or over rice or just sit there with a fork and stuff your face.
We eat a LOT of Mexican influenced food, a lot of beans, and grill meats year round. I try to only go to town once in a while so the fresh stuff gets eaten pretty fast after a shopping trip. Don't have enough water (or motivation) to do a big garden but try to have tomatoes and chilis, some herbs and squash when I can.
Find an old Cowbelles cook book from New Mexico or AZ, those are fun.
Are you cooking for one and do you have a real freezer? I have 4 total in the house at the moment and we are all big eaters so leftovers just don't happen and that can be a problem with smaller households - and that is why a freezer and lots of plastic containers can be a good investment.

:) ...I've been spending a few days with my brother's family near Los Alamos and they eat very well, nothing fancy, just simple healthy food, some of which they grow in their garden...being here makes me realize how poor my own diet is and that I really need to start cooking again.
Just cooking for myself. I need to get a freezer and a new fridge, which makes too much noise, but that will have to wait.

Oh, I get it!
It's a cut-up 18 1/2 pound turkey!
Funny thing...I'm cooking our dinner in a crock pot too...sliced top sirloin, covered by mushrooms, a sliced onion and a can of stewed tomatoes...
Yummy dinner, and a cool kitchen!

Yep cut up like a big chicken - a little more work wrassling a turkey, but basically the same.
I do tougher cuts of beef like thick round steak - onions and tomatoes too. I never remember mushrooms.

if it isn't coming along by 5pm or so I'll crank it up to hi. The newer crock pots seem to run hotter than the old ones.
They sure are nice for having a hot meal during hot weather or when you need to be gone for several hours.
A bit of a pain to clean the big heavy pot, but I have figured out if I rub a little oil on it first that helps. I have heard of using those cooking bags too, but they make me nervous.
