This a "painting" of a guitar that I did several years ago. I used colored pencils which allow me to layer several colors to get the effect that I'm looking for. Artists who use colored pencils tend to call their works "paintings" instead of "drawings" because we believe that we are putting down pigment just like in painting. This work is titled "Wild Thing", and it measures 21" X 29". I hope you enjoy it.

23. I'm so jealous of people that can look at something and then draw/paint it.

I'm unable to even draw a circle without a template so my artistic endeavors are limited to what I can see through the lens of my camera.

These are not final product, but rather quickie reminders of photos that I intend to finish when the weather gets cold and I'm trapped indoors.

26. Dearest Peggy,

I have so many ideas for the water drop and thankfully it's the easiest one to do.

You simply place the item that you want in the drop behind it and then focus on the drop with a large aperture so the background is blurred. In this photo the yellow background is actually the flower in the drop. Be sure that the drop is shielded from your lights so there is no glare on the edges.

I'm hoping to borrow a light source that is fast enough that I can catch the drop in mid-air so it appears suspended in mid-air.

Edit to add: Remember that everything is reversed in the drop. The white that you see at the top is the styrofoam cup of water that the flower is in and the white/silver on the left is the clamp/arm on top of an upside-down styrofoam cup that's holding the needle.

How big are they if I might ask? I've seen the Obama bust in the artist group before (but was too lazy to comment, I apologize,) and the second really speaks to me for some reason. Do you sculpt these first in clay and then make forms out of them for further processing?

41. They are various scales.

The Obama is non-scale but close to 1/2 scale it measures roughly 12.5" tall (32cm). It was created in polymer clay and sculpting wax. This "bronze" painted version is a poly-resin casting.

The Punisher sculpture is 8" tall (18cm) and was sculpted in polymer clay and was used as a master to create cold-cast polystone statues. The Conan sculpt measures roughly 13.5" tall (34cm) and is made of polymer clay, wax and will be used as master for cold-cast resin hobby model kits. The Conan and Punisher were both sculpted in parts so they can easily be "cast" and reproduced in poly resin. It's much more durable for the production process once they are off to the factory.

Will look into polymer clay. Coming from a family of sculptors (excluding myself,) living with an artist you know of, this sounds very interesting. I did some stuff with sculpting wax, clay and early polymers (early 80's,) but of course all I could manage to do was perhaps a thingie, that was long, half-round and had a few fingerprints in it. ;)

Outside of the digital stuff I hardly ever use color at all. I'm not comfortable with it and never have been, and it rarely fits the subject matter anyways (though I did have a color version of the zombie that I had taken into Corel Painter and messed with...that got wiped by the virus I had on the PC a couple weeks ago).

just so much care of them. lol.

i am having trouble resisting "touching" them myself. it is something new that i am doing, and i am so very tempted to paint them. afraid to screw them up, tho. each piece is truly one of a kind. the clay part is made up of object that i have saved, baby clothes and such, and they are coated with casting slip and fired. so the little precious thing is gone, but it leaves the shape and texture behind. like a fossil.

I can understand the temptation to paint them. I gessoed fine cloth to a canvas once, moved the wrinkles it around till it made good shapes. Was very satisfied with the texture but decided the shapes needed more definition and painted it. I really regretted it afterwards, something was lost, the character of the cloth.

67. not sure about posting this, (not good, not finished, not pd source), but

I always sketch when I fly, and I fly a lot, so I have stacks of sketches as a result. 99% of them are based on my imagination, but I recall my brain was not being particularly creative or helpful that day, so, frustrated and out of ideas, I looked through magazines to find a face that would serve as a good likeness test/exercise.

I take copyright, attribution and usage rights *very* seriously - so even using a magazine photo for such an exercise is rare for me, so this is an anomaly, and posting it makes me a little squirmy, the fact that it's not particularly good and unfinished is even more annoying. But in this case, curiosity trumps my flaky tendency to be obsessively picky (never useful).

But it was such a surprise to stumble on something I'd forgotten about since 2006 when I did it - and I was immediately struck by the similarity with this sketch and what few images I've seen of DJ AM - someone I know nothing about prior to his devastating plane crash and more recently, his tragic death. I've since learned that he was highly admired for his talent, and perhaps more highly respected for his recovery and work in helping others with recovery - no small feat in the music industry, it's culture and environment that generally seems antithetical to sobriety...

Either way, stumbling on this three year old sketch seemed an odd coincidence - or not. I couldn't figure it out if it was or wasn't after doing a quick google search, so I figured I'd post it here, knowing someone will verify that I'm out of my gourd... : )
