I just read 1984

It's truly and undeniably terrifying. To think of yourself as one of those living in such a society; so dark and grim, is what frightened me the most. Day after day, you are wracked with anxiety and paranoia, wondering if you will live through the next hour.

My feelings on the story aside, I have to say that George Orwell is truly a master.

Yes, it is terrifying. To think of living in a such a world; so much pain, sorrow, hopelessness, and even simple, relentless discomfort. And to think further that it was deliberately designed to be that way by the Powers That Be. Those of us on the left, and even some on the right, always seem to bring up the specter of Big Brother, and an Orwellian universe when we're unhappy with government or society. But I think we can all agree that it is nowhere near as bad as depicted in Orwell's novel.

11. The anxiety and paranoia are your life only if you're in the Party...

...for the proles, life is meaningless and shallow but relatively good as they are plied with gin, chocolate, and entertainment to keep them happy and unquestioning. Think fast food, American Idol and other reality shows.
